Hallo All,

Some pics of current WIP, Kamioka Castle in Hida Province Japan.I'm going for a slightly worn appearance, it's seen a few heavy Alpine winters, so is less than pristine :-)

The rest are here…

Enjoy!

Best wishes,

I have to admit the photo had me fooled….great work

Costanzo108 Feb 2015 10:17 a.m. PST

Simply amazing!!!

Snake77708 Feb 2015 10:29 a.m. PST

Thank you Random & Castanzo :-) I have the rest of the enclosure walls to do plus a couple of ancillary buildings, it's kinda modular so the outer court can be varied in size.

Really nice I actually thought that was a photo of the real thing till I went to the page. Impressive

That's a 1/72 model? Damn, you're good!

Where's the eyes-bugging-out-in-shock and jaw-dropping smilies on this forum?

I thought it was real, based on the first pic!

Excellent. Truly amazing work.

The weathering effect is exceptionally good and you have taken some great photographs. Well done.

cwlinsj08 Feb 2015 1:41 p.m. PST

Spectacular. The aged wood is perfect!

Seeing your work makes me want to throw all my stuff out!

Snake77708 Feb 2015 2:01 p.m. PST

Thank you All :-) I'm no photographer, but the pix came out rather well, more by luck than judgement! The weathering is down to my secret recipe… Colron refined beeswax Jacobean Dark Oak… which I scrub on with an old brush but don't polish to a shine, when this has dried I then liberally coat the whole thing in dust… literally, I use ash from the fire which clings to the wax just enough to give that well worn appearance. The wax also helps protect the paper and hides all the bits that I missed with the paint brush…

Thank you again for the great comments, they are much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Stu

Lovely. Truly lovely.

Would you care to share how you do your stonework?

Snake77708 Feb 2015 3:13 p.m. PST

Thank you Swampster:-)

@ cwlinsj… my stuff is basically papercraft, its built out of card, paper and any bits I have lying around, the pieces are then textured using free textures from the internet, the best site I've found is this:

cgtextures.com/index.php

It has a vast selection and it's free, all you have to do is register to download, the stonework for the base came from there, they have a selection of pics of Japanese castle walls… I then make the model more 3D with added windows, shutters, steps etc… but basically I cheat :-)

Very, very impressive work.

Anything more you'd care to share about your techniques would be welcome.

That's not "cheating", Snake . . . that's skill.

Snake77708 Feb 2015 4:31 p.m. PST

Thank you War Artisan :-) Once I've decided what I want to build, I try and get as much good quality front-on pictorial reference as I can, a lot of the time I can use these pics to texture the model too. Then it's a case of cloning, skewing, distorting and resizing the various elements in Photoshop to get the required size and to hide gaps :-) I then make up A4 sheets of all the elements that are needed for a particular model plus a few extras in case of accidents. These are then printed out, cut out and glued to 1.5mm greyboard, waxed and weathered and there ya go!

I have to admit that I work painfully slowly and there are always bits that need re-adjusting or abandoning completely. :-)

First picture – OK trick post

Rest of them – jaw hits ground and bounces off

Bookmarked – there is a wealth of ideas here if I ever get off the computer and actually build anything

No trick John, the first pic is of the model :-)

Many thanks, and I hope your jaw has returned to its right and proper place!
