So, here's my question:

What would you be comfortable paying for 28mm WW2 miniatures at a convention? These would be painted and based to a good war games standard, but by no means professional.

Single figure = ?
Team Weapon Stand = ?
Tank/Armored Car = ?

For discussion sake, let's say they are a 6/7 out of 10 paint wise. What would you be comfortable paying for each of the above if you were in the market for such things?

I don't game 28mm any longer, but when I did, I also painted all my own figures. So anything painted would be a strip job. With that being said …

Single figure: 50c
Team stand: 50c per figure
Tank/armoured car: maybe … $5 USD-10? Depends on how badly I wanted. Most of these are resin, so more work to strip.

That would be my maximum, otherwise I might as well buy brand new and not have the hassle of stripping the paint off.

I would check out the painting services on these sites. The one I use paints for $1.70 USD a 28mm figure and then there is postage to and from as additional cost. I then add details to to the face painting. I can paint my own figures I just have time constraints.

So, if you paint to a reasonable standard a $2.00 USD up charge on the figure is reasonable. People walk away with the product at the convention. No postage costs.

In this hobby, you find people with zero disposable income and others with lots of it. So be prepared to haggle with people. And have thick skin, people will be critical of your work. Some of it will be constructive and maybe speed up your paint process and enhance your technique.

You might want to make up ready made squads, so that people can quickly buy and game. So it would'nt hurt to verse yourself in how many figures in a squad for different popular rule sets.

And by all means talk to people. They can help with painting techniques, paint colors and brands, uniform details. (Make sure you have the correct shoulder titles for the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.)

well that was long winded and my two cents.

Ask what you are comfortable with for your time and effort. If you want $5 USD a figure, ask that. If you want $15 USD, ask that. The worst people can do is not buy your stuff.

I have only bought painted figures once, and that was because I could not have painted them as well. I think I paid around $8 USD apiece for Imperial Romans.

You will find that a lot of people are in this hobby because they enjoy painting. Those who just want to game are all over the place in what they are willing to pay for painted figures. Don't have your feelings hurt if someone offers $1 USD a figure. For crisp, clean paint jobs, the going price is $3 USD-5 a figure in 28mm, but if you add a little shading and detail, you can easily get twice that.

I have sold quite a few figures over the years, thousands. Maybe 10,000. I used to supplement my teaching income by taking commissions. Back in the late 90s I was charging $2 USD each for block paint jobs (6-7/10 GAJO) on 15mm ACW figures. These days I charge $10 USD-15 apiece for 28mm figures. I think my painting is better than most, probably a 8-10/10 on GAJO. I hope that helps with your pricing.

For an impulse buy, $2 USD or less per fig. If I am looking to buy, $3 USD to $4 USD per figure. As noted above, I have also seen people pay real money for painted figs without batting an eye.

Thanks everyone. If I'm still of a mind to sell them (I go back and forth on this all the time) at HAVOC I guess it'd be $2 USD bucks per guy and $x for weapon teams = to how many guys are on the stand. Vehicles I guess I'd just take a reasonable offer. Maybe 5-10.

I buy painted figures all the time. For very well painted 28mm (Lord of the Rings) I happily pay $4 USD-8 for foot, $10 USD-12 for mounted, sometimes a tad more.

But these are for very well painted. Not sure what "a good wargames standard" is but that's at least a reference piint for you.

Also, look on Ebay and follow a bunch of auctions and see what things like yours actually sell for.

This is what the average quality looks like:

Rank and file are on 25mm rounds, officers and ncos are on 35mm rounds
