So, let me get it started. Your first source for African animals has to be Irregular Miniatures range of 15 mm figures. They have more sculpts for this than all other ranges in existence combined to the best of my knowledge (which, for this subject, is pretty good since I've been on this hunt for a long time). Perhaps in second place is Mick Yarrow Miniatures. A few other notable sources with an animal or two: Peter Pig (vietnam and modern africa), Splintered Light (ostrich), Blue Moon (a bit fantasy oriented gorillas). HATT has a jungle set that is a decent source for plastic. And then there are some small TOOB type things (just found one at the local Michael's about a week or two ago – even an Okapi, but mostly immature animals. And at least one local hobby shop has a spin rack of soft plastic or rubber toys. Between those sources I have elephants, lions, zebras (horses), wildebeests (african cattle), hippos, rhinos, water buffalo (asian more than African, Grumpy), ostrich, flamingo, hyenas, crocodiles, ant eaters and pangolins, thompson's gazelles (really pronghorns but they'll work in a pinch), okapi (as above), leopards and cheetahs. Maybe more but that's what springs to mind. Really want baboons, real African cape buffalo, vultures, some dead prey animals, actual zebra scuplts. And would love to see three or four purpose designed African antelope species to build some nice herds, same with wildebeests. The nice thing about 15 mm is that you can easily put together groups that look more like herds – though Richard of Warin15mm did a brilliant job in his recent most about his Africa collection in the larger scale. Please add other sources if you know of any. And maybe someone can do this for the larger scale in a Separate Thread. Let's keep this one for 15 mm, please. Thanks. EMW |

Great thread! Where did you find the flamingos? The President of Mugabia would love to have some on the palace grounds. |

You can give Preiser HO a look. I know they make hippos, rhinos and flamingos because I saw them last week at my local train store (Arnie's Trains) I'm sure they make others as well. The only downside to Preiser is they are expensive. While I can't think of a manufacturer name, I know there are people who make or made HO scale circus animals, and you might do a search in that area for animals. Early Morning, thanks again for the kind words about my Africa collection, and good luck with this project. Richard |

irishserb, HO can be a source but size is a bit of a problem for some items though, for India, I love the peacocks. But I found my flamingoes in a local hobby shop spin rack with no label on it and they are a bit bigger than I'd like but the best I've found so far. I suspect they are made by Eco, a Chinese company (or distributor, maybe). deflatermouse, check out Michael's and their toob toys but look for much smaller toobs – only draw back is you only get one okapi per toob so I bought all three they had when I was in. Also, like the undead horse, another think I've been looking for (not for fantasy but for dead animals in scale) Let's all give Richard (War In 15mm) a run for his money! And for those who haven't done so, you must check out Blue Moon's Darkest Africa range for people to populate your Africa. And Rebel Minis has some great figures in their pulp range, especially the digger set (digs don't always have to be in Egypt!) |

@ deflatermouse Okapi are solitary animals, so you'll never need a herd; one is enough !! |

My top three needs are these: chimpanzees, baboons, and cape buffalo. Any ideas? A couple of adds to the list – Stone Mountain British colonials includes a pack of Zulu cattle that I used mixed with Irregulars African cattle to create my Wildybeesties (or wildebeests if you prefer – or simply gnus). And Minifigs has naked elephants (if I recall, more suitable for India but an option). And Irregular now has both an African and an India elephant figure. |

Early Morning Writer – Where did you find leopards and cheetahs? Thanks in advance, Barry |
Early morning writer | 24 Mar 2015 11:03 p.m. PST |
Barry, Cheetahs came from the HATT remake of the Jungle set originally by airfix (the Tarzan set, really.) The Leopards came from a little set I found at our local zoo – a few animals the right size that came in a little plastic blue suitcase container. Only one per set – I got three of the very useful HATT set (for animals, anyway). Happy to help. |

There are now 15 mm (1:100 scale so close to 18 mm) African Cape buffalo on the market – currently through Highlander Studios (and include one Zulu rider in the pack) and perhaps from me at some point in 2018 (mine will include a dead buffalo along with the other 7 unique sculpts). I got tired of waiting and hoping and commissioned these myself. Here is a link: link And, yes, both Highlander and I have posted this link previously. Just figured it was good to include the link in this discussion for those who haven't seen it yet. |
