Just curious to see if anyone is working on a modern, Cold War variant of NUTS!, or if anyone has come up with special house rules, stats, etc. to permit them to play some Cold War era games? Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to do, save for all of the variety of new weapons systems and firearms available. I'm interested in the early Cold War period, of the 1950s and 1960s, through the mid-1980s. I think the early period would almost be a done deal, since a lot of WWII kit, or slightly upgraded WWII kit was in use by the major players, e.g. US, Soviets, NATO, etc. Thoughts? |

Seems to me all you really need are the weapons stats. And given how the system treats weapons as "all the same" – that is all SMGs are the same, all bolt action rifles are the same etc. – what is really important is *relative* forepower. M60 vs. M14 or M16. So the Vietnam version (FNG) would be useful at least for some stats and so on. |

Yea, it's been a while since I've looked at the rules, but recall them giving a favorable impression to myself, and many others. Since they lump a lot of weapon types together, that might make things even easier. Will have to check into FNG as well. Can't recall what the acronym stands for. Are the rules still available for sale? |

A few people on the forum have been putting some work into this. Direct link to relevant thread: link |

FNG is supposedly a slang term for the new recruits that showed up in Vietnam: Friendly New Guy. Or something very similar. Available: twohourwargames.com/fng.html |

Oh, yea, that rings a bell now, and it definitely wasn't "Friendly" New Guy. Thanks for the info and links. My current area of interest is Cold War Goes Hot in the European Theater, though Vietnam and Crimea/Ukraine are interesting too, amongst other settings. Perhaps to include Russians in Afghanistan, for an interesting twist, as well. |

There's FNG, but honestly, you can use Nuts as is. The THW system is fairly generic so you can slot most any period with guns into it and it'll play very well. It does have a very unique style when you play which a few people get turned off by and many love. Have you played Nuts or Chain Reaction before? |

One possible way to mesh things….use the Nuts! rules system and look in to Force On Force for the data – they have a Cold War Gone Hot book, as well as books for Afghanistan and Iraq. You'd just need to "translate from FoF" back to Nuts/FNG (or just play FoF). |

I believe the Chain Reaction PDF is free so grab that and it'll give you a pretty good impression. It includes modern weapons but not vehicles (from what I understand) |

I wrote an FNG variant for the Soviet Afghan War a few years ago. It's posted on the THW Yahoo group (Yes, you have to join the group to see it.) It uses an older version of the chain reaction system, but I don't think enough has changed for it to make much of a difference… |

Regarding FNG, wasn't there a spec-ops version also? I thought both were out of print? |
