I like my soldiers to have a weathered look. Unfortunately, the Vallejo English Uniform dries with a glossy look. I've tried different bottles, but they come out the same. It's a useful color, so does anyone have suggestions for a flatter look (like my favorite, Russian Uniform)?

Try this tip – bit.ly/1CyTu8w – which I have used extensively with Vallejo paints and many other brands.

I'm reading the blog, and I want to make sure we are speaking the same English (sometimes y'all call things by the wrong name outside the U.S.). Do you mean something like Clubman Talcum Powder – a brand I found for sale in the U.S. And on Amazon UK?

Do you mean something like Clubman Talcum Powder?

Yes but uncoloured and unperfumed like this:

This is the bomb ..

Tamiya X21 Flat Base is good but you can't use it on its own: you have to add it to paint or varnish.

I use it to create "Flat Future" see – bit.ly/169r0Su

One such occasion occurred this morning whilst varnishing some 15 mm Swiss halberdiers for my renaissance French army. The problem was only obvious on the red and blue jackets of the figures which retained a slight satin sheen.

Obviously your Swiss just like expensive silk doublets!

Just add some of Vallejo's own model colour thinner, it will flatten it. Failing that add a very small amount of Tamiya X-21 Flat Base.

You can also add some AK interactive's acrilic matt varnish, straight to the paint/water dilution. It won't bleach the colour. The only thing is that it takes a bit more time to dry.

Did you use their matte varnish over it?

freerangeegg06 Feb 2015 12:26 p.m. PST

Just apply matte varnish after painting.
I use a future wash which leaves a slight gloss finish on any model, but it all comes out fine after a coat of matte varnish

All of my figures are very matt and 'weathered', but go through various stages of glossiness (especially after being liberally brushed with Army Painter strong tone. A quick coat of Army Painter anti- shine spray varnish takes everything back to completely matt.

Spray it with matte from Testors.
