Re: your thoughts on drums. Existing drums – 'dutch' drum at Royal Armouries Leeds, slightly later 'militia' drum at Chirk Castle 1670s, contemporary English 'Royalist' drum at CMSM.

All have coats of arms painted on them. The CMSM drum has what look like piles wavy painted on it. See link for pictures.
