Besides the Guards Armored Div. what other div's made-up XXX Corps? Were there any independent brigades? Thanks for the help.

Martin Rapier05 Feb 2015 4:21 a.m. PST

The ground forces of Market-Garden comprised the bulk of 2nd Army, VIII Corps, XII Corps and XXX Corps.

XXX Corps had Guards Armoured Div, 43rd and 50th Infantry Divs plus the 8th Armoured Brigade and the Royal Netherlands Brigade. 52nd Lowland Div was also assigned to 1st Allied Airborne Army.

Wiki has a very good & comprehensive orbat of all units for Market Garden.

Edit – just seen this has already been posted.

To add to what Martin and Wiki said:

The Belgian Brigade's Armoured Car Squadron and Field Artillery Battery (which had three Troops – 12 guns total, as opposed to the normal 8) were also attached to XXX Corps.

44th RTR from 4th Armoured Brigade was attached to XXX Corps, to provide armoured support to 101st Airborne once they linked up.

Similarly, 15/19th (Royal) Hussars, who were the Armoured Recce Regiment for 11th Armoured Division, were also attached to XXX Corps, again to provide armoured support for 101st Airborne Division.

One full brigade of 52nd (Lowland) Division, plus that division's 'sea-tail' (i.e. the Recce Regiment, most of the division's RA & RE Groups and the bulk of the administrative elements) was also assigned to follow XXX Corps, along with the sea-tails of the rest of I Airborne Corps.

There was another infantry division recce regiment involved in convoy escort, though I forget which one at the moment.

Jemima Fawr05 Feb 2015 6:24 a.m. PST

And don't forget XXX Corps' corps troops:

11th Hussars had been detached to 7th Armoured Division in XII Corps, though Guards Armoured Division had received 2nd HCR from VIII Corps.

73rd AT Regt RA (M10c & 17pdr towed by Crusader tractor)
27th Light AA Regt RA

5th AGRA:
4th RHA (25pdr)
7th Medium Regt RA (5.5)
64th Medium Regt RA (5.5 & 4.5)
84th Medium Regt RA
121st Medium Regt RA
52nd Heavy Regt RA

There was also a Heavy AA Regt with 3.7-inch guns.

Plus lots of other bits & pieces.

Martin Rapier05 Feb 2015 8:15 a.m. PST

Yes indeed, there are all sorts of fun bits and pieces attached to XXX Corps specifically.

I'd often wondered why there were 44 RTR units in the XXX Corps countermix for 'Hells Highway'!

I'll second this. It is an excellent resource and quick primer for Market Garden.

Jemima Fawr05 Feb 2015 2:03 p.m. PST

Well it's ok, though does contain some howlers such as Tulip rockets for the Guards Armoured Division…

Andy P06 Feb 2015 3:18 a.m. PST

It does but it gives list of who was there, then a bit of research to get the actual ORBATS.

Oh and one that doesn't make in onto the ORBATs.

2nd A/L LAA Btty R.A attached from 6th Airborne to 1st Airborne . Supposed to provided Ground and Air defence for landing grounds.

Mark – is this the point to mention Nutforce?

More LRCs a bizarre mix of 6pdrs and 20mm AA and some armoured jeeps…but not really working for XXX Corps?

Last Hussar11 Feb 2015 5:08 p.m. PST

Allied forces are easy- Try getting the German mix! "2000 cadets", "Elements of…". When you do get a unit pinned down you can't be sure of the composition "## Panzer Battalion" turns out to be 3 Stugs!

Martin Rapier13 Feb 2015 7:04 a.m. PST

Not even the Germans knew what they had, what can make it a tad difficult to pin down. As mentioned in another thread, either records weren't kept, or were innacurate, or have been lost.

There is something of an emerging consensus about the Germans though, even if we'll never really know in detail what e.g. Marine Auffanglager Zwolle actually consisted of. Probably a bunch of blokes with rifles and LMGs.

Last Hussar15 Feb 2015 6:46 a.m. PST

I have my complete Allied Market-Garden Orbat somewhere, formatted to be 1 unit = 1 Company. I got much of the high level German stuff done, but despite trying to cross reference numerous sources, I couldn't get a decent idea of what they had, or even if they attacked piecemeal or consolidated.

As Google is giving me Zwolle Marine Dentention Unit, I doubt they gave LMGs to blokes in the 'Glasshouse", but we'll never know!

Adam,

I'd forgotten about Sqn Ldr Nutting et al! :)

I wish I knew what the title of his book was… Or where to find another copy.

I did see a history of 30 AU by Pen & Sword in Waterstone's some years ago, but like an idiot didn't buy it!

Andy P17 Feb 2015 3:19 a.m. PST

I got the book on 30 AU out of the Library, was an ok read but didn't really go into too much detail more an overview of where and when and what they captured?

Andy P17 Feb 2015 3:24 a.m. PST
