Thanks for the update. This company does some odd things. What, I cannot help but wonder, is the point of these given their previous artillery sets were excellent, bigger and doubtless will prove to have been better value? |
GurKhan | 04 Feb 2015 5:48 a.m. PST |
Westerner, I think these new smaller Zvezda sets are specifically intended as pieces for their "Art of Tactic" game. |

Hi Westerner, Your remarks made me curious, so I took a look at the contents of the three older Zvezda Napoleonic artillery sets at Plastic Soldier Review: link link link If nothing else, these new smaller sets offer some different poses from the older, larger sets. The sculpting looks great. I'm sure you're right about the value. A small criticism, as far as the new French foot artillery figures are concerned: I'll bet the two gunners holding the trail spikes are praying that they can let go before the over-anxious gunner fires the gun! Could two men really handle the recoil of a field artillery piece? I would guess not. |

On a recent TMP thread there was a very long post about artillery (was it in the arc of fire thread perhaps) where the guy said guns would be fired while held by the trail spikes (canister I assume). Back to OP, well, they are nice, but too expensive to make them worthwhile. £1.00 GBP a cavalryman and I am heading nearer to 28mm prices, so not a good price point for 1/72 |

I sure hope we don't go to war with these people. It's uncalled for. |
Westerner | 05 Feb 2015 4:26 a.m. PST |
Well, yes. The fact that Zvezda has effectively abandoned traditional 1/72 sets in favour of its own Art of Tactic game, and, therefore, duplicates subjects in smaller sets representing poorer value is, I think, precisely why I find their current strategy odd and unhelpful. With WW2 I have found some of these mini-sets provide useful supplements to other figure sets. I could view these Napoleonic sets in the same way; variety is always welcome. My issue is that they are hardly necessary and certainly no substitute for the old sets (unless you (only) want to play "Art of Tactics or whatever it's called). It certainly does not represent progress, more of an odd cul de sac. |

Exactly! I don´t understand how they can completely abandon a rather large market for such a questionable strategy. Unless, of course, Art of Tactics is the biggest gaming hit in Russia right now! |

These figures are in hard styrene which makes them considerably easier to clean up than their soft plastic counterparts. Maybe not economical for gaming but they certainly make beautiful vignettes! |

Agreed suk, just bemoaning the loss of the full sets – I saw on a Russian FB page pics of the proposed Russian Jaegers – oh my, they look so nice, and to know they are gone for good is just gutting. Same with the new French infantry – the Zvezda sets were so good, it is just eating me up inside to know they are not making them anymore. |

I hear you Marc. If I have to spend hours cutting and sanding soft plastic figures I'd rather they be Zvezda! |

Okay, so who wants to make an offer to Zvezda for the molds? Hell, if I had the dough I would do it just for the artillery! |

Well that´s two of us, a few hundred (or maybe thousand) more and we should be able to pull it off! |

Kickstarter! I'm in We buy the moulds, lease to haT, they produce and distribute. Win win. |

Careful, Marc; there's a sanction regime at present…. |
Marc the plastics fan | 09 Feb 2015 4:05 a.m. PST |
Oooh – good point :-) Ok, we smuggle the moulds out, then start a new shell corporation based in a tax haven – I am prepared to be on site to oversee (if it is the Bahamas – I am not holidaying in the Isle of man). |
Green Tiger | 13 Feb 2015 4:15 a.m. PST |
Easier to clean up but more fragile – I have lost a musket already just cleaning them – when you only have 6 in a box that's serious… |
Westerner | 13 Feb 2015 11:01 a.m. PST |
Yes, indeed. When President Putin wants to evade the sanctions regime and/or watch Netflix, he travels to the West as his alter ego, Dobby the House Elf. |
