Here are a few pix of the terrained and based Over Mountain Men for my Kings Mountain project. The scatter material is my own concoction of all different spices, flock, small rocks and twigs. I think it looks quite realistic and am happy with the way things are progressing.

These photos are to highlight the groundwork and the progress made since he last batch of pix. I know that my camera skills are limited. I'll try to do better next time.
The last picture is of an unterrained (is that a real word?) stand just to show how things start out.

Nice work!

Fantastic! Are those gaming bases or display bases? Either way I want to see the finished project.

Nice.

Are those real twigs from your yard? If so, how do you keep them from drying out and breaking up?

I really like how well the Dixon Miniatures blend in with the King's Mountain Miniatures. Remarkable variety!

Dave, The bases are for display in a Battle of Kings Mountain diorama. But there is no reason why you could not game the battle and use these figures. I believe that one of our esteemed memebers is going to do just that, but with his own figures.

Zippy, Yes they are twigs and pieces of sagebrush. I soak them in a solution of matte medium, distlled water and a drop of dishwashing liquid, which seals them and keeps them
from breaking up.

Wow! A most original Fall scene. Also, a very good use of natural materials to make it most realistic.

Very well done and thanks for sharing the photos.

I love the ground cover! Please provide more details about it. What spices did you use?

FlyXwire04 Feb 2015 1:29 p.m. PST

Sharp, Sharp, Sharp!

Keep us abreast of the diorama's progress, and similar gaming projects please (if at all possible).

Redcoat, To be honest, I just went to the spices section at BJ's or Costco and took everything that looked like leaves or scatter to me. Oregano is one that I recall. Just look in any supermarket spices section.

But there are also about a dozen other materials mixed in there made from various brands of flocking. Scenic Express and Woodlands Scenic's mostly, along with some tea leaves, ballast, and lots of broken up twigs from the outside yard. The barren trees are sagebrush armatures that I broke up into "branches" and scattered around. I found a bag of crushed cork at Michaels and threw that into the mix. That works out really well for whatever reason.

I soaked the ground with matte medium and took a handful of scatter material and let it drop from about a foot above the stand. I let it dry overnight and removed the excess by turning the stand upside down and letting whatever didn't stick fall back into the box. I use one of those plastic shoe boxes to mix the scatter in. The trick is to mix it up before each application.

I'll go over any larger objects with an additional coat of matte medium to seal everything in place.
Some modelers will claim that white glue (PVA) and water is just as good as matte medium. It's not. You can see the results for yourself. I mix about 80% medium with 20% water and a drop of dishwashing liquid into a dropper bottle. I use the dropper bottle to place the medium where I want it to go. This gives you control
over where the material will stick.

Thanks for the nice comments.
