Are those who rush in on a conversation to tell you that their interests are stupid.

I ran into this with a "famous" hard science fiction writer once. I was speaking to one of his colleagues at a beer and donut party (these sci fi writers have strange tastes…) when I mentioned Steeleye Span to him, and how they have not so much updated as put a different spin on old folk tunes with modern electric instruments. The obnoxious one came running over to us from at least 20 feet away to tell the guy I was talking to what a stupid idea that was. Never looked at me. "Can you imagine hearing 'The Lum Hat Mourning the Croon' played by the Beatles"? Or something like that. I got my revenge. I vowed to never buy any of his books, ever. I bet I cost him at least $5.40 USD. That showed him! The point is that he wanted to tell a perfect stranger (me) how stupid he was. (Three guesses, and I have already mentioned this here on TMP a time or two.)

Similar is when you are discussing a TV show you were watching last night when some toad says from another table blurts out "I do not have a television in my house! I refuse to allow such swill…etc."

So, when you hear me discussing with someone who I want to win the Super Bowl, and you have nothing but contempt for sports..… save it.

Sounds exactly like when Harlan Ellison jumped into a conversation I was having about X-Men writer Chris Claremont on a shuttle at the San Diego Comicon back in the late eighties. Twerp.

You forgot the comma after the "th"….

Steeleye Span were drop-dead brilliant but HATED by Old Folkies. Now intrigued by who your opinionated writer may be. Plus, this is a COMPLETELY relevant thread for TMP since Steeleye Span's album Commoners' Crown featured a model crown made entirely of Airfix plastic soldiers. link

I can beat that. I once went to a fundraiser party of rich people where the guest of honor was a semi-famous TV and radio personality. One of my friends was volunteering at the party, helping hang up coats. He later saw the guest of honor, walked up to him, extended his hand, and told him how much he liked his work. Well, the guy cooly looked down at my friend's hand, turned, and walked away without saying a thing. Ever since that day, I have never been able to listen/watch that guy without thinking how much of an a-hole he is.

And no, I don't get invited to parties with rich people on a regular basis. It's a long story.

Old Folkies hate anybody who isn't a Communist or can actually carry a tune.

Really? Check out Shirley Collins then try repeating that. :-)

I'm an Old Folkie and I resemble that remark!

Legbiter31 Jan 2015 2:38 p.m. PST

Yeah, me too! Except I'm no longer a Communist, and CAN carry a tune. Mind you, I still think Fairy Tale of New York is the BEST song of the 20th century, though it has a lineage as Red as Harry Red on National Red Day in Redograd. Ahem. Nothing to do with Steeleye Span, of course. Kirsty McCall's dad was one of the worst Haters of electro-folk, and a commie till the day he died. Great artists all, nothing bad will have come to them in the afterlife, if there is one!

Kirsty McColl; not that it really matters, given that Ewan McColl was an invented stage name.

What a sad day it was when she died so horribly and prematurely.

Prefer Fairport myself. Brilliant live – or, were when I last saw them. Not many could match Sandy Denny.

Winston Smith31 Jan 2015 10:11 p.m. PST

Ever hear Ewan McColl sing? I rest my case. He makes Bob Dylan sound like Enrico Fermi.

Bashytubits31 Jan 2015 10:34 p.m. PST

I think I can summarize.

Ha! Pikers all of them. Go to an American Historical Association annual meeting.

So I am confused. Should I like Steeleye Span or NOT like Steeleye Span?

Help me comrades…
