Found this at a flea market a few weeks ago. An Opisometer or Map Measure. Used in the old days for measure distances on maps. Looks like a very cool ruler for miniature war gaming.
The big hand measures inches, and the smaller second hand measures feet. You can find them on eBay between for about $20 USD |

I have one that my grandfather used during the Finnish winter war. It might be a bit confusing to use in gaming, though. It only measures kilometers and miles on maps of certain standard scales. The neat thing about these devices is that they can easily measure curving routes – you just roll it along the route, taking the curves as they come. |

Some digital models let you set the scale without having to have a graphic representation, such as a graphic scale bar. I've been using digital models since the 1990's. |
