…Roddenberry's Star Trek the flagship of a massive franchise that by all rights shouldn't exist. The show's first pilot was rejected, and the series was cancelled after three years—and yet it kept coming back. It's a phenomenon that seems curious until you actually watch the show, at which point you realize exactly why things unfolded that way.

Star Trek (or Star Trek: The Original Series, as it's now referred to) is many things: a drama, a comedy, a series about ideas and interpersonal conflicts, a competition to see which actors can eat the most scenery and much, much more. That variety is a strength; even if it's slow by today's televisual standards, the fact that you never really know what's coming next gives the series unexpected bingeability.

And if that's not enough to convince you to watch, there's always one of the world's greatest TV show openings:…"

I have the OS on DVD, the Red, Yellow and Blue plastic boxes.

My wife binged on the whole thing, well, "binge" is relative to her: she watched an episode or two per week. She did this solely because the family kept making "Galaxy Quest" jokes and references, and my wife would ask what was so funny, and she wouldn't get it. We told her that she'd have to watch the OS first, then watch Galaxy Quest. She did. What focus. What drive. What determination. I am still impressed….

Pretty cool stuff. It's been shared on TMP before but these guys are doing a super job of making new TOS episodes and keeping in the spirit of the original.

Uhura and Scotty are the 'Redshirts' who defied stereotype and cheated death time and again.

The thing that "scares" me is even with my fragmenting memory I still know which episode the picture is from.

"The thing that "scares" me is even with my fragmenting memory I still know which episode the picture is from."

It's the shirtless Kirk, isn't it Sargon? Dead giveaway lol.

"Uhura and Scotty are the 'Redshirts' who defied stereotype and cheated death time and again."

Well, Scotty did die twice during the show's run – Nomad killed him, then brought him bsck to life, and the god Apollo also killed him and then brought him back to life. Beat that, Spock!

I wonder when that still was taken; presumably during the period that George Takei was off filming The Green Berets.

I'm currently watching Star Trek the original series for the first time in over a decade and in the order they were produced; you see the show grow and develop and I have to say it's really, really good. Much better than I remember it.

Watching it in production order you can see when Takei was off filming The Green Berets because there's a great big chunk of season 2 without him in it.

Oh and Star Trek Continues is great. If you haven't seen it, do so. They're making two more episodes right now.

And for those of you who are wondering…the OP still is from the episode "I, Mudd".

It certainly changed sci-fi, in a very good way IMO …
