Here are two Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible battle reports. One was an eight-hander at the Maidstone club using eight detachments and taking about five hours.

picture

This had five people involved who had never played using the system before. It involved a run down a long table to gain access to some hydroponic farms.

The second was two days later with a very similar game with the same objective. This was a four-hander that I didn't take part in but just umpired and facilitated. As all the players were familiar with the rules we had seven detachments and only two hours after set up) on an 8x6 but there was a degree of 'oooh can I just see you?, are you obscured' type judgement calls that I had to pull my laser pointer out for, adjudication for the use of!

picture

Both were fun games and saw some new forces out on the tables: Tony Francis' Sulwesi (and his fearsome Heavy TAS) and – on the other game – Jim Clark's Hiroseki national Army.

picture

Have a look at the page on TMP of the Sulwesi that's already up TMP link

Meanwhile, have a look at the pages on the Slammers site of full game reports:

Hammering Maidstone link with a mix of mine and Tony's pictures

Warlords Club Game link with my pics.

Enjoy!

PS Some of Jim Clark's Bushmaster detachment that just did a spin on the table at the end of the game so I could shoot them!

Very nice and not helping me resist 15mm SciFi!

John Treadaway29 Jan 2015 6:59 a.m. PST

Do not resist Frostie: resistance is useless!

In reality, unless there are serious space or financial encouragements to go for smaller scales, the lure of 15mm – with the vast spread of (usually very high quality) toys available plus the cost and space advantages over 28mm – made it a no-brainer for me.

And this is speaking as someone who had already built the Slammers stuff in 28mm (check the rule book out…!) and did a lot of the play testing in 6mm.

For me it's just the best compromise and – after all – with gaming almost everything is a compromise.

But I can attest that the rules run the same in all three scales: the idea wasn't to do bigger or smaller games in the different scales, just cheaper/more expensive and more compact/huge & vast depending on size – the game's the same, only the scale has been changed to protect the innocent/budget/table acreage (delete as appropriate!)

Awesome stuff!

I, too, must also resist. Must resist..

Great stuff and the setting seems perfect for sci-if gaming.

The thing I like about the whole thing is the setting, Goshawk. Drake's books really capture the 'period' for me (by which I mean Vietnam in space with some extra SF knobs on).

I find the background material very engaging.

That's a series I haven't gotten into, but will be giving it a try soon. A good book usually make me want to game it out. And therin lies the concern! :)
