For those like myself, who may initially be unfamiliar with the Horse & Musket period in general (and the SYW in particular) and the actualities of military practice therein, as they relate to war gaming, a brief blog post about the oft-recommended Four Big Books.

A longer list of texts for Second Year Studies will appear in future, so recommendations for that list are always welcome. Cheers, and as always, thanks to the many who've kindly shared their knowledge and expertise on the period.

TL: DR

Nosworthy, Brent: Anatomy of Victory
Duffy, Christopher: The Military Life of Frederick the Great
Showalter, Dennis: Frederick the Great: A Military History
Duffy, Christopher: The Military Experience in the Age of Reason

Grommet37,

Have a look at the Kronoskaf- Project Seven Years War site.

Upper right hand corner you will find a link to a treasure chest of primary sources available as e-books.

Add to your list Savory's "His Britannic Majesty's Army in Germany", reprinted and available through 18th Century Press.

"The Wars of Frederick the Great" by D. Showalter is a great read. It is very well written narrative of both the AWS and SYW relating to FtG.

I don't have the Showalter book in the OP, but if it written half as well as the one I do have it will probably be worth picking up.

Nosworthy's book is extremely useful for understanding the nuts and bolts.
