A friend wants to get back into gaming and has asked for some help. He has a collection of 20mm Romans and Germanic / Celts figures. He is looking for a set of rules that are quick to pick up and play that will allow him to do battles rather than skirmishing. His figures are un based so re basing is not an issue.

All thoughts and help is gratefully accepted.

DBA might be his best bet. We use WRG 6th – not quick to pick up and play.

Give L'art De La Guerre a shot. Most games are over in under 2.5 hours. If that's too long DBA is over in an hour or so. Rally Round the King is a good set as well.

I would take a look at Basic Impetus. It is a fairly simple, fun game. Loads of help with rules queries on the forum. And it is free!

As a totally radical alternative to Ancients rules might I suggest Battles For Empire – a set of colonial warfare rules

I use DBx basing just to make life easy

I use them for Caesarian Romans vs Celts or Late Romans v Blemmye

Sword & Spear
have painted the Caesarian Romans, now 6 bases into Early German, 13 bases to go

Perhaps, 'To the Strongest' from BigRedBat: bigredbatshop.co.uk

Several good batreps here on TMP so you can see them in use.

As long as you don't expect too much from the Celts, Neil Thomas's AMW is great place for beginners to start and is very adaptable. Still much in use down our way for big historical battles …

Hail Caesar would be good too.

Here's an AAR of a Sword & Spear Romans vs Gauls game:

This will give a good idea of how this sort of match-up will play out under these rules.

Sword and Spear and Basic Impetus are fun and both have modest requirements in terms of number of stands, complexity and cost to get started.

Another recommendation for Neil Thomas's AMW, although the Celtic warbands are hideously outclassed by Legionaries, unless the warbands are in a wood….

I've just ordered Thomas' "One Hour Wargames" to use with my son and his friends for various periods, including ancients. Does anyone know if those rules are similar to the ones in AMW proper?

The OHW rules are MUCH simpler!

Scutarii from Hoplite Research lulu.com/spotlight/HRGWORLDS
The rules include a scenario for the Battle of Bibracte with Caesar vs the Gauls.

The rules are quickly comprehended and allow epic battles such as Bibracte with over 180 units on the Gallic side and almost 70 on the Roman side to be fought in an afternoon.

Here's a link to some pictures of a "To the Strongest!" game I played last week between Germans and Celts. N.B. I used a lot of minis, because I have them – it could have been played with far fewer.
