With the right head swaps and paint job, would the uniform differences be that noticeable? I'm looking for a good variety of uniforms in my troops. To my eyes the clothes look the same, and I know often times Continentals wore captured British uniforms. Plus I hate how the white gaiters look on Continentals and I've seen enough uniform plates to know there was variety….Thanks for any opinions.

There were times when captured English clothing stocks were utilized by the rebels. The coat would be dyed a different color.

Webb's Continentals wore red faced, I believe, with yellow. They became the 9th Connecticut in 1780(?).

the purist would say that the British had button hole lace on the facings of their coat, the continentals, for the most part, did not.

I'm no purist, though, and I mix it up with my own troops.

IN the 1779 Regulations, the Georgia and N & S Carolina Continentals had blue coats with blue facings, but had buttonhole lace on the cuffs and lapels – British figures would be perfect for these. Other Continental units also had buttonhole lace from time to time – eg 26th Continental Regt of 1776 (also had one company in cloth grenadier mitres).

Will it cause upset at your usual gaming table? If not, go for it.

I know that sounds like heresy but really, if you like the figures, why not use them? I have a number of figures in my armies that are technically "wrong" in minor or not so minor ways. Most don't bother me enough to change.

For uniformed regulars British should pass for Continentals with the right painting as long as a button lace expert doesn't look too closely.
