Or should I say colour. I was wondering what color/colour do use? I am interested in the 70s. What brand and color would be great. I would prefer acrylic, much easier to clean up and on the lungs also.

Humbrol Army Green with black disruptive patterns. Not sure what the nearest Vallejo would be, but it is a much lighter green than NATO green.

I use Humbrol 159 over Humbrol 75 over black undercoat, finished off with a very light dry-brush of Humbrol 72, which is exactly how I paint my British WW2, aside from the camo. I'm happy with it.

@jemima fawr

Your models look good. What make are they?

HistoryPhD23 Jan 2015 4:04 p.m. PST

I use Vallejo bronze green and black

Jefthing31 Jan 2015 9:42 a.m. PST

I undercoat black then slap on Vallejo Russian Uniform. I then wash with thinned black, dry brush the green back on and dry brush the black with Vallejo grey-black. Looks like it's been airbrushed!

This is for 20mm vehicles. I'll try and get some photos on my wiki this week.

Thanks Rhysius,

They're QRF 15mm models. Their FV-432 variants and Chietain are absolutely superb. The Ferret wasn't quite so good though (and I got the wrong mark by mistake…).

Some useless info for you: there was no set pattern scheme for vehicles but there was a percentage of coverage which was something like 60/40 green/black. So, unless you have far too much time on your hands and can assess this accurately, just make sure there is more green than black!

A mate of mine was doing a repaint of his Chieftain, so painted the black first; carefully painting out all the green bits. They then had an all-black Chieftain for a couple of days until the SSM spotted them…

Now there's a good excuse to field a funky Chieftain…

A book I read on non-German Leopards mentioned that Danish recce units sometimes had all-black tanks (Leopard 1DK & M41 DK1), though I've never seen a photo of these mythical beasts.

manchesterreg08 Feb 2015 10:29 a.m. PST

Jemima, worked with the Danish Recce, Garde Hussars or something similar back in the early 80s, none of their vehicles were painted all black? not saying they were not, but not around that time.

Jemima Fawr15 Feb 2015 6:06 p.m. PST

Yeah, I've seen no evidence for it. I think I also read it on a Danish armour website or somesuch.

I got bollacked when doing some boring repainting of our LWBs. The MTO didn't appreciate back/green dartboard wheels…

Don't forget that patch painting was frequently carried out often leading to slightly different tones,

Tally Ho!

We used to paint Micky Mouse and other Disney characters on our tanks, till the SSM saw them, !

And no spraying for us – tins and No 3 brushes…

GeoffQRF24 Mar 2015 7:09 a.m. PST

Yes… we saw some of our wonderfully detailed 100 scale recognition models after some of you boys had painted them with tins and No.3 brushes… more paint than tank… ;-)
