…Boko Haram attacks.

"Nigeria's national security adviser has blamed cowardice for the army's failure to protect civilians from attacks by Boko Haram extremists, saying many soldiers had joined up because they wanted a job, but were not willing to fight.

Sambo Dasuki rejected suggestions that the Nigerian garrison in the town of Baga, overrun by the Islamist group at the beginning of the month, had been under-equipped, citing the substantial arsenal seized by the attackers that was displayed by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in a video claiming responsibility posted online on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House in London, Dasuki said that the list of equipment lost in Baga included six armoured cars with 4,000 rounds of heavy ammunition in each, as well as artillery pieces…"

I read this article.
Funny how politicians and advisers can say this from the safety of a city far away. Never on the front line with a weapon in their hands.
A soldier claimed their equipment was substandard or didn't work. They were also outgunned he also claimed.

True, it's easy for the politicians and advisors to ask the PBI to lay down their lives while they themselves are safely ensconced in their ivory towers.

This is what happens when you lack a professional officer and NCO corps.

The Nigerian Army isn't exactly competent or honourable or professional.

The leadership is corrupt and incompetent and like most third world countries, grunt work is a way to get a regular paying job. I wouldn't be surprised if the lower echelons are corrupt too.

It's not unheard of – corruption was rampant in Yugoslav National Army at all levels (grnadfather was a professional NCO) and the Indonesian Army was actually allowed by law to be corrupt (units were expected to raise funds themselves due to lack of government funding be it running textile factores or running chunks of the drug trade).

Their first priority isn't defending the country against armed aggression. Many tin-pot armies fail when faced with people who shoot back.

Agree with all of this …
