So George had some film ideas for the new series, and Disney basically said, "We'll give these all due consideration." (Cue sound of paper shredder.)

Probably a good thing, given his last four attempts.

Probably a good thing, given his last four attempts.

Definitely a good thing, in my book.

A very good thing.

wolfgangbrooks21 Jan 2015 12:42 p.m. PST

Judging by the current state of Hollywood, Lucas was the only thing making his movies watchable. I'm not looking forward to the new fan-wank movies at all.

Also love people applauding a big corporation willfully ignoring the creator of series long known for not being under a corporate thumb. I mean I would rather Lucas have put Starwars in the public domain, at least it could have burnt out instead of being milked to death.

McWong7321 Jan 2015 12:50 p.m. PST

There are over 4 billion reasons why he shouldn't care.

tberry740321 Jan 2015 12:53 p.m. PST

You are not looking forward to "…fan-wank movies…", but, you would rather see Star Wars in Public Domain where you would get a constant stream of "fan-wank" movies?

Mithmee21 Jan 2015 1:08 p.m. PST

Lucas was the only thing making his movies watchable.

Thing is he is the one who:

Changed the first movie so that Han shoots second, we all know that Han would have shot first.

Gave us Jar Jar Binks

So yes Disney should not even consider any of his ideas.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik21 Jan 2015 1:23 p.m. PST

Can't be any worse, and Disney has done wonders for Marvel. GotG basically is SW.

Lucas also gave us the Ewoks, Jabba as a giant slug (on a desert planet !?!), that stupid "lips" singing alien at the Hutt palace, pig-snouted guards, "Boba Fett? Where?" *Bump* *plop* "Burrrrrpppp", a second Death Star (because he couldn't think of anything new), trade negotiations as the opening sequence, a whiny ten-year-old brat as a future evil Jedi (wait, maybe that actually makes sense), Christian Haydensen (for which no forgiveness is possible), a teenage queen who appears to have been elected (?), the ridiculous rules for Jedi (no anger, no love… no humanity, then, I guess?), ad nauseam. Oh, and the horrible "special editions" CGI-inserted bloat-a-rewrites.

He may have fathered the child, but he also spoiled it.

Not saying Disney will give us something much better, but they'd be hard pressed to make it worse.

wargame insomniac21 Jan 2015 1:42 p.m. PST

@Mithmee – spot on. Han shooting first was part of showing him as a scoundrel. Better journey when he becomes a hero. The only thing I can say politely about Jar Jar was he was worse than the Ewoks.

Abwehrschlacht21 Jan 2015 1:48 p.m. PST

Lucas was the only thing making his movies watchable.

For Episode IV it was the editors (who had their work cut out by all accounts), for Eps V and VI it was the directors, Lucas took a step back and just funded. The man can't direct as demonstrated by episodes I-III.

wolfgangbrooks21 Jan 2015 1:49 p.m. PST

@tberry7403:

I also said it would effectively put an end to the franchise, which would be great. Let's be honest, it's never been a good series. The worship people seem to hold for it is just beyond me.

The best thing about it at all has been the visual design, which I would argue was better in the prequels. But that's just me.

edit: Yeah guys, how dare I say that Lucas is anything more than human filth? You showed me.

Winston Smith21 Jan 2015 1:50 p.m. PST

I am reminded of the Alan Alda character in "Sweet Liberty".
His book was being made into a movie and he was waving the book and contract in the director 's face.
"This contract gives me the right to consult on the script!"
"OK. We just consulted."

Striker21 Jan 2015 1:57 p.m. PST

I love Disney's vision, a cartoon crossover is not far. Vegas will be taking odds on who will be the "special guest star".

Dynaman878921 Jan 2015 2:07 p.m. PST

Let us not forget the Star Wars Holiday Special, no things can NOT get worse now.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP21 Jan 2015 2:25 p.m. PST

Don't get me wrong, wolfgangbrooks. Lucas was and is a visionary and a visual genius. He's just not a very good writer or an effective director of actors in intimate scenes. What he does best is the grand epic scheme and the visual spectacle of space opera. For that, he has no parallel. Give the man a huge canvas to fill, and he knows how to fill it. Just don't give him a typewriter or a director's chair.

ordinarybass21 Jan 2015 2:34 p.m. PST

I'd much rather trust JJ Abrams who will probably have the studio looking over his shoulder (Result Star Trek) than Lucas with nobody looking over his shoulder (Result Episodes 1-3).

Mako1121 Jan 2015 2:44 p.m. PST

Smart move…..

gamershs21 Jan 2015 3:16 p.m. PST

Will reserve judgement till I see the movie. Too much judgement and too little to base it on.

"Also love people applauding a big corporation willfully ignoring the creator of series long known for not being under a corporate thumb."

Well, it's called capitalism. If they make a good product, it will survive. If they don't, it's dead. He made a good product, then slowly killed it over the years. Had they not bought it I doubt another movie would ever have been made. So I for one applaud our new alien overlords, I mean Disney.

Charlie 1221 Jan 2015 6:03 p.m. PST

Isn't it time for the whole Star Wars franchise to just die off and never be seen or heard from again? Just how many toy tie-ins can you push?

With any luck, Abrams will so badly botch the job (like he did with Star Trek) that the whole thing just goes away…

Captain Gideon21 Jan 2015 6:55 p.m. PST

wargame insomniac you really don't like Jar Jar Binks do you?

For me the Ewoks are VERY BAD as is C3PO whom I hate with a passion.

For myself I would like to thank George Lucas for giving the World Jar Jar Binks because he is my FAVORITE Star Wars character.

Winston Smith21 Jan 2015 6:58 p.m. PST

Lucas is wallowing in his money, like Scrooge McDuck in his money bin. He sold the rights for gazillions of dollars. He is not a poor artist novelist starving in a Garrett.
Feeling sorry for him is…..

Winston Smith21 Jan 2015 7:00 p.m. PST

Scrooge McDuck is a Disney character. I just realized the IRONY!

doug redshirt21 Jan 2015 7:50 p.m. PST

So who will Disney get to play Scrooge McDuck to completely derail this thread.

mad monkey 121 Jan 2015 8:03 p.m. PST

Getting Lucas out was the best thing they could have done.

Also, one thing JJ Abrams has done is go back to the original Mcquarrie art for inspiration. This alone gives me hope that it will breathe life into the series. That and Disney has announced they will be releasing the original Trilogy on Blu-ray without the unspeakable horror of the Lucas revisions.

Honest, the best thing to come out of StarWars is the StarWars miniatures game. ( Now Pleases can we get a version for WW1 and WW2… Please-Please-Please)
As for Gorgie, give him a scene in the new franchise across from Han in which Han draws first hehehe.
Cheers if they are doing what they say as far as the sets and such, it'll be an OK space opera, Bleeped text the story really its the fight scenes we go to see anyway.
Luke there goes your father.

Matsuru Sami Kaze22 Jan 2015 11:55 a.m. PST

OMG. You should see the design of the Lucas proposed and backed Museum storytelling arts planned for Chicago's lakefront. They are calling the design The Blob.

boy wundyr x22 Jan 2015 12:06 p.m. PST

I disagree Zargon, anyone can do fight scenes, doing fight scenes we care about is another matter. That was one of the big problems with the Ep.I-III (or the ST reboot), it was all just beautiful pap.

For Ep.IV and to some extent the rest of the first triology, Lucas was at least cribbing from some good stuff – Flash Gordon serials, Hidden Fortress, Dambusters/Battle of Britain, Campbell's mythology. As long as they do a halfway decent job of filing the serial numbers off, I'd be ok if Ep.VII is a take on Odysseus or Troy or Shakespeare.

Zargon22 Jan 2015 12:20 p.m. PST

Yup agree boy wundyr , what I'm saying is they are going back to the older style of the IV> movies, personally the I-II-III movies which I also thought were 'pap' :) nice word (means flat and empty in Afrikaans BTW :)
Here's hoping we get our moneys worth.
Cheers

The real question is how many hours are we willing to stand in line to see the movie and will we wear a SW costume when we go. Becsuse we all know we are going to go see it. :-)

DS615123 Jan 2015 11:21 p.m. PST

Bleeped text the story really its the fight scenes we go to see anyway.

No. No, it's really not.

Also, one thing JJ Abrams has done is go back to the original Mcquarrie art for inspiration. This alone gives me hope that it will breathe life into the series.

It's his involvement that is the one thing guaranteeing its total demise.

I'm afraid the lens flare will be quite operational when the film arrives.

That Russian Chick26 Jan 2015 7:42 a.m. PST

Abrams "Star Trek" movies are really just Star Wars movies anyway, so expect more of that. They are flashy and slick, hitting all the tropes without seeming to understand what the meaning of those tropes should be.

I'm not really interested in any more movies from him.

Lord Ashram30 Jan 2015 9:31 a.m. PST

I often think that Lucas just got lucky, because Jesus the new movies and the added stuff were ducking terrible.

Rabbit 302 Feb 2015 4:19 a.m. PST

I thought we had already?
Its called `Wings of Glory these days.

Sargonarhes03 Feb 2015 6:28 p.m. PST

Two titles why Disney and Star Wars is a bad idea.

John Carter

The Lone Range.

Enough said.

Bob Runnicles04 Feb 2015 7:59 a.m. PST

I'll give you The Lone Ranger, sure, but dissing John Carter? Them's fighting words! John Carter was AWESOME! The perfect example of why Disney will be great at Star Wars.

CzarBLood04 Feb 2015 3:54 p.m. PST

Did you watch The Avengers? guess what , its a disney movie , they have left marvel comics to there own devices , Disney allow there IP to be developed properly , and tbh with Kathleen Kennady at the helm of Lucasrts division , with her record of films she has produced its looking good to me .

I can ignore all thr toys…..well maybe not the lego!

Sargonarhes04 Feb 2015 5:00 p.m. PST

I tend to ignore all movies based on Marvel because I hate Marvel. Not to mention I don't like the writer for the last few Marvel either so I can proudly call it crap in spite of what every one else thinks and tells me.

So I've already written it off.

So there is really no changing my mind on this.

CzarBLood05 Feb 2015 7:25 p.m. PST

So on the basis of not watching something , you can call it crap…

Intersting world view there, hope you are never asked for a valid opinion s im sure they would be disppointed.

Weasel08 Feb 2015 8:04 p.m. PST

It should probably have been put to rest a long time ago, but I think it's time for new people to come in and take a stab at it.

Lucas fell in love with his characters and I think a new perspective will be good.

Grey Matter 1323 Mar 2015 7:37 p.m. PST

While I agree that Lucas had his great ideas, he owns Jar-Jar and a whiny teenage Vader-to-be. Disney has big shoes to fill non-the-less, but also has a huge wallet. Hopefully, they will not mix any of their other projects with the Star Wars universe. I'd literally burn everything SW if a flipping Muppet comes out somewhere in the movie. It was bad enough to see a bunch of ET's in the Galactic Senate before Disney bought in. I remain hopeful that they respect the fanbase and not solely look to squeeze profit out it forgoing any hope of continuing the legacy.

Visceral Impact Studios28 Mar 2015 4:51 p.m. PST

They should let Riddley Scott do a Star Wars movie…
