How did the Austrians lose at Montebello? They had two or three times as many men as the French, but they failed to get half of them into action. What wargamer would make the same mistake? ;-) Here is my attempt at creating a Montebello game that is both realistic and balanced, as a small practice/training scenario for BBB. Health warning: I have not playtested it myself yet. As always, comments welcome!

The Austrians usually lose when we play it too. I based the scenario on the V&B one iirc (or possibly the Fire & Fury Francesa one, I can't recall at this distance in time) |

I guess one factor I've omitted in my first draft is that some of the Austrians may still have had muskets rather than Lorenz rifles. Any of you knowledgeable folks out there have any idea how many and in which units? Chris |

According to the Spectator, the French captured 12,000 Austrian muskets. If that helps. link This is also an entertaining read. So much stuff is now available, it's far too distracting. link |

Thanks, Nick, but I would guess that 12,000 figure embraces both smoothbore and rifled muskets. And it is for Magenta, not just Montebello. Chris |

I gave Paumgartens division smoothbores while Hesse and Urban got rifles. The scenarios original author (Martin Soilleuax-Cardwell) stated the ratio of rifles to muskets in the Austrian Army at this time was 60:40. |

Hmm, dunno: "Apart from a certain proportion of Grenzer and other second-line troops armed either with the «Konsol» smoothbore percussion musket, or the Delvigne-type «Kammerbüchse » M1842 et M1848, the bulk of the Austrian infantry were armed with the model 1854 Lorenz rifle". link Which might or might not mean 60:40. And wasn't Urban's a Reserve Division? Not that it matters a huge amount. But I'd like to find a definitive source, rather than just looting from others' scenarios. Chris |
