My primary question is did the SdKfz 251/7 command halftrack in a German panzerpionier platoon have a MG 38/42 or did it have a 37mm PaK 38 ATG like the SdKfz 251/10? Second were the SdKfz 251/17 flamethower halftracks part of a Pionier platoons organization or were they in their own platoon organization and attached to thea Pionier platoon? Thanks and salut y'all

Texas Grognard: The website Achtung Panzer says it was equipped with 2 MGs and a PzB39 anti-tank rifle. It also had extra radio equipment (of coarse)!

I'm hardly an expert, but putting a gun on a command vehicle seems a waste. Command vehicles shouldnt be fighting, should they?

Sdkfz 251/17 is anti-air, not flammenwerfer. You mean/16, I suppose.

1. Quite often (in 1943) it was SdKfz 251/10, as well as /7 (MG only), there could be also /1 and /17.

2. Officially they were separate platoons. However there were not enough vehicles. So… I made my Gepanzert pionieer platoon as 2x Sdkfz 251/16 + 2x Sdkfz 251/7. Maybe not "rulsy", but historically enough.

Historically it varied:

Tanks Encyclopedia says that a "Panzergrenadier Regiment was supplied by a platoon of 6 Flammpanzerwagon." They also list it as a SdKfz 251/16, not 251/17.

Not entirely sure, but I am only aware of one set of photos of a /7 Ausf C mounting a 3.7cm PaK and I believe it is considered most unusual/rare. I think there are also photos of one mounting SPzb 41, likewise something of an oddity.

SPzb was in every platoon till 1944, but it was just transported, not equipped.

Armored Flamethrower platoon (six 251/16, one kettenrad and three 3 ton supply trucks) and was the 4th Platoon of the 10th (Regimental Pioneer) Company. There was no specialized 'command' track, like the the tankers, the flame platoon leader rode the 1st vehicle(1001).

Not every Division had them however. link

Some panzer recce battalions also had a platoon of 251/16 (e.g. 21 Panzer Recce Bn in Normandy). Though as you say, not every division had them.

not sure about that, seen plenty of pics (and countless models) with the ATR mounted, and ausfD models with the pzrbsche still knocking around in 45
