I was thinning out my painted 15mm ACW figures this weekend and came across several Whitworth rifled guns. As I do mainly western battles I thought I could sell off all the castings. My only reference I could find for the north using them was that McCellan had them (but did not use them). My only reference for the south was that Lee used a battery in the eastern theater.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the use of this field piece in the western theater during the war?

Thanks

PzJ

Not that I know of. I believe their was a section of two at fort fisher that would run out on the beach and fire at blockaders as blockade runners came in. But that's the only other use I can think of off the top of my head.

At the battle of Raymond, Bledsoe's battery had one.

Yes, Bledsoe's 5th Missouri Battery (CSA) did have one Whitworth gun which exploded during Battle of Raymond, Mississippi, May 12, 1863.

There were several Whitworth's in the Washington Louisiana Artillery in the ANV. I would have to look up which company they were with. I didn't know about Bledso's battery, thanks ColCampbell.

Was it a pair of Whitworths that signalled the start of the Confederate bombardment prior to Picket's Charge?
