Last night we used 'Form Line of Battle' to fight this excellent Napoleonic frigate action.

Good stuff! Why fight Trafalgar when you have Lissa?

That was an enjoyable read and nice models too. On the issue of the Franco-Venetians avoiding the Volage, how would they know it was only armed with Carronades? I imagine you could put such knowledge down to espionage or similar but it made me wonder (should you re-fight the battle), if the RN ships should simply be numbered and the names only revealed when the Volage comes into action. That way you might avoid the situation where the enemy keeps its distance.

"how would they know it was only armed with Carronades?"

In a limited theatre with a small number of ships it was probably known. And, failing that, once guns are run out I'm guessing it should be obvious to anyone with a telescope or reasonable powers of observation.

In fact the Volage is the weakest ship on the table, being a level smaller than all of the other vessels in FLOB and thus easier to score hits on. The carronades put on on parity with the French 40s on the gunnery table, at point-blank range. So leaving out the modifiers for crew the Volage would lose a straight duel. Its danger is purely psychological :)

How long did the game run? I assume you used the base FLOB rules? Did you use the detailed rules?

I would think that Volage would have matched up reasonably well against one of the Venetian 12lbr frigates.

@dantheman – It took us a leisurely four hours, with only two players for about half of that time handling the ten ships between them. We didn't play any advanced rules – no ammunition loads, or use of the special rules for small-ship actions. We just used the basic rules with a few options (like Poor crews potentially missing turns)

@Blutarski – You're quite right. A check of the numbers in the game shows that she'd give them quite a pounding, especially with the difference in crew quality.

Lissa is an almost ideal battle for gaming. One side has better force the other has a bigger force.
