Yes, truly one of the outstanding designers.

Met him twice: first time at Origins '77 and later as a play tester for SL.

A loss for the hobby.

RIP.

GROSSMAN12 Jan 2015 6:55 p.m. PST

Not only Johnny Reb, but the designer of Squad Leader. Both defining games of their genre.

John's enthusiasm, vision, and dedication to the hobby will be sorely missed.

I'm stunned. It seems we've lost quite a few of the real builders of the hobby.

A very good designer and gamer. RIP

nazrat12 Jan 2015 8:29 p.m. PST

What a shock! I met him last year at Historicon and he was a gracious, kind man. He will be sorely missed.

Ironwolf12 Jan 2015 8:30 p.m. PST

Sad to hear. Back in the 80's and no internet. I started out gaming D&D when I was ten years old. Introduced to it by a friends cousin who came to visit him. Always being interested in military history, (Sgt Rock comics) I'd think of a ww-II version of D&D. When I was 12 years old my mom gave me ten bucks for my b-day and took me to the mall. I found Squad Leader at KayBee Toys!!! I was short a few bucks and made a deal with my mom to pay her back with my yard mowing money. Bargain made, Squad Leader purchased for my b-day is what lead me to a life time hobby of miniature gaming. Thank you John Hill and thanks mom for letting me use the dinning room table for multiple days of Squad Leader with my friends.

RIP John Hill, You will be sadley missed
First played ACW with the Aifix rules but later found "Johnny Reb 2ed" witch was is my prefered Regimental level ACW rules set. Would have like to seen some expansions to cover the period from 1840's Mexican – American wars to the end of the Indian wars of the1870s and 80s

Who asked this joker12 Jan 2015 9:35 p.m. PST

I played quite a bit of Squad Leader back in the day. Thanks Mr. Hill for getting a group of tweets into WW2 board gaming. RIP.

GGouveia12 Jan 2015 9:41 p.m. PST

RIP John, prayers out to the family. I played alot of John's rules in the 80s, lots of Squad Leader which eventually got me into ww2 gaming.I also played alot of Johny Reb back in the day. Those two sets contributed so much to the hobby. So sad, and too soon.

RIP

I will miss you, my friend and mentor.

Without your inspiration, I would not have written so many wargaming scenarios, books, and the CHARGE! newsletter I owe you so much.

Rest in peace, John.

normsmith12 Jan 2015 10:22 p.m. PST

My favourite designer and someone significant in my adoption of a lifetime hobby. I am really saddened by this news.

John was an outstanding gentleman. I had the pleasure to encounter John at the many miniatures conventions we both attended over the years. I count myself lucky to have known him. He will be missed. RIP

Grunt186113 Jan 2015 6:57 a.m. PST

This news is devastatingly sad. My John Hill signed Squad Leader and Johnny Reb Games have a place of honor on my game shelf. They will come down off that shelf this weekend and be played.

Godspeed Mr. Hill

I met John several times and extensively corresponded with him recently. Beyond all the genius of his game designs, John was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. As will so many, I shall miss him. God love him and keep him and his family.

God Bless.

Rest in peace sir….

Early morning writer13 Jan 2015 7:05 p.m. PST

Met the man but once and very briefly. He came by to thank me for running a Johnny Reb game at the first of the two Celebrate History conventions in San Francisco, a classy move. His JRII rules ruled my gaming life for twenty or more years. After a life of wargaming he is now at peace forever more.

COL Scott ret13 Jan 2015 11:42 p.m. PST

He will be missed a gentleman and a scholar.
