I wanted to pass along the sad news that Editor Julia's 10-year-old brother, Jericho, has been diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease – in other words, his heart has been damaged by a previous illness.

Julia and her family will certainly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and if you are familiar with this disease and have any info for her, you can reach her here: TMP link

I lost a good friend, who had been diagnosed with this disease as a child, to a heart attack in his fifties. He drank like a fish, smoked like a chimney, partied like a trooper. He could have lived longer if he'd taken care of his health, but he expected a short life, so he made as merry as possible.

Best of luck to your brother Julia. Tell him it's not fair, but he can still have the life he wants, if he makes the right choices.

Of the five of us, he is the only one who has been to doctors for so many times. I reached 21 years and never had any serious illness, same with my older siblings. I feel sad and disappointed knowing this. I've been to foreign lands, I've tasted delicious food, I hung out with friends till dawn. I am thinking, how can he do this? How can he feel the happiness of doing those things if in his young age he has this complication.

On the 16th, he's turning 11. Will try to prepare something for him to make it special. I do not want my brother to be different from other kids around. I want a normal life for him.

jowady13 Jan 2015 11:59 p.m. PST

Prayers and best wishes Julia, from my family to yours.

Julia,

I came down with Rheumatic Fever with heart complication at about the same age as your brother. It resulted is a few visits to the hospital and a some restrictions during my childhood.

It was a bit of a hard time for the whole family.

As a note of hope for you, on my next birthday (in April) I'll be 62 and have lived a full life with more to come.

Thoughts and prayers,

Vince
