The film starts in Los Angeles, in the year 2019!

So, I guess that, in the next 4 years we need to develop …

1) Flying police cars;
2) Off-world colonies;
3) Replicants, identical to humans;
4) Massive glass pyramids;
5) A commonly used pidgin dialect of English, Spanish, Chinese and a handful of other languages;
6) Instant eye makeup

Anything else?

Even LA isn't smoggy enough for what is seen in the film, perhaps Beijing? I was there during that rainfall they recently had and if it starts raining like shown in the film then there will not be any LA left after a couple hours.

Neon would have to make a comeback in a very big way too.

cmdr kevin11 Jan 2015 11:09 a.m. PST

Maybe it will be like that in 2119?

psssstttt it was only a film, it wasn't real! It was a real cracker of a film and it was one of the first films I ever bought on video! OK I'm showing my age a little but it doesn't take anything away from it. Its got to be in my all time top ten of movies ever made

Coelacanth11 Jan 2015 12:03 p.m. PST

Although the date of the film is still in the future, it is obvious to me that Deckard lives in an alternate timeline where people were busy during the 1990s inventing all that stuff instead of wasting time on the Internet.

3)…… They're already here and ruling the world. It's the only possible explanation for the current madness. ; )

Dan, I have the massive glass pyramid covered.

We have also made progress on the replicants and instant eye makeup.

…And at least one flying car…

And the availabity of swearing in unintelligble patois is almost universal where I live….

Repliants?

Have you ever seen any of the contestants on x factor or Big Brother? If they are real people I'll eat my hat…

OK the only colonies we have in space is… well just one and it's only a couple of hundred miles straight up (and no more than half a dozen folks at a time): ya got me there!

I still can't believe Escape from New York took place 18 years in the past. . .

sleb2211 Jan 2015 2:46 p.m. PST

The original Robocop was supposed to be 1993. 22 years ago.

Geee, I'm still waiting for my rocket pack, motorized sidewalks and a moon base. …and the snap brimmed fedora.

In all seriousness, I think they will have replicants by 2019, they have some pretty realistic looking robots now, in 4 years I can see a human looking robot on the market.

Bad news: Replicants are prohibited on Earth ;)

Also, Japan Takes Over The World is a thing of the past (for now), after the "lost decade" of the 90s…

Except its clear that China is well on its way to taking over the world.
We just need another banking collapse

Zargon12 Jan 2015 5:23 a.m. PST

If I remember LA was a total polygot of peoples in BR and the eye maker guy (very cool scene) was Chinese and the fashion? sudo-1940s mixed with Japanese Buck Rogers And umbrellas,see through raincoats. Very cool.
And remember Rachel didn't know she was one, I'm betting doesn't know either :)

Zardoz12 Jan 2015 5:50 a.m. PST

The film was superb – I actually prefer the thatrical release with the voice over.

Making predictions is hard, particularly if they involve the future.

And it wasn't meant to be right. It was meant to be a great film. And it was.

'5) A commonly used pidgin dialect of English, Spanish, Chinese and a handful of other languages;'

Okay, that one is covered. Ever traveled in Asia?

Henry Martini12 Jan 2015 9:28 p.m. PST

While walking down the central mall in our fair capital city the other day, gazing up at the giant 24 hour advertising plasma screen occupying a large chunk of upper level building frontage, surrounded by the multi-ethnic, Asian-heavy throng, I couldn't help but see the parallels with images from that cinematic classic of yesteryear.

Littlearmies13 Jan 2015 6:54 a.m. PST

If you watch one of the documentaries about making the movie it rapidly becomes appararent that most of the design and shooting decisions were actually made to save money. Essentially their special effects budget didn't run to glossy new sets so they just dressed up the regular back lot LA street with neon lights, hoses, and so on – and then filmed at night and in the "rain" so you couldn't see quite how cheesy it all was. Great film – I'm appalled that some of my young office colleagues haven't seen it (and have never heard of Phillip K Dick).

wehrmacht13 Jan 2015 2:21 p.m. PST

7) parking meters that electrocute violators

Twoball Cane13 Jan 2015 3:22 p.m. PST

A great movie and it is my number two scifi film that influenced me. Harrisonfords best movie IMO.

It wasn't the characters though it was the set and decorations that even to this day make my mind wander
