Looking for some simple quickplay rules for ACW river battles.
Anybody have any preferences or suggestions or a review of the rules they use.

Smoke on the Water for both 1/600 and 1/1200 scale. Fairly easy to learn, but if your ships have a lot of guns, you'll be rolling a lot of dice. I would suggest using the rate of fire rules to cut down on the die rolling. But overall, a nice set. No longer published, but I am sure there are folks here that can send you the free version when it was available as a download.

Do consider Hammerin' iron by Peter Pig. Very elegant. Uses about 6 ships a side.
Uses a hex cloth/table or free moving hexes.

Sail & Steam Navies, fun set. It's what we use until the old Yaquinto "Ironclads" comes out as a miniatures set! Toby???

I will second the recommendation for Sail and Steam Navies (available through Wargame Vault purchase link)

If you're interested in learning more about the mechanics of the rules, I did a short review of the rules on my blog (review link)

You might also consider "Age of Iron". It is not hex based and is easy to learn.

Thank you for so many replies in such a short time. I will look into some of those. I dont like hex games and I only have the 2 ACW fleet packs from Navwar, So no sailing ships.
I bough the Navwar Ironclad Era rules but they ant the smoothest and quickest. Lots of searching through the rules to find things.

If anyone has Smoke on the water or any other rule sets they could send me that would be fantastic. I mind trying out anyones rules to play test as well.

I know you don't like hex games but the free hex moving system of hammering iron isn't like other hex games you place hexes down to move across and remove them after you have used them. It sounds weird but simplifies movement and is rather elegant once you try it. I don't class it as a hex based game when played this way. For ease of set-up Martin has done a hex based version with a lovely river cloth, but has left the original free hex version as well in the second edition.

I like Smoke on the Water, but found it too slow for my local players as it has detailed movement, firing and damage systems. I changed the movement and orders to a card driven system and it improved a lot by cutting down on the time. Expect to do a lot of shooting (dice rolling) and successful armour saves ( dice-rolls) if you play this.

Ireally like General quarters for WW2 naval wargaming. I like the use of stat cards to keep a track of the damage etc. I
s there a ironclad version or a set of rules that use stat cards ?

ChargeSir11 Jan 2015 8:11 a.m. PST

You have a diagram of your ship in Smoke on the Water showing position of guns ( plus what arcs they fire in ) what armour each area has and flotation boxes which you cross off as you take more damage. You also record guns lost and criticals by marking up the diagrams.

Hammering Iron also records damage on a sheet, but is more of a beer and pretzels level so you record less.

Floating Iron is a free set that is simple:

If you can find "The Ironclads" from Yaquinto, I recommend that game too. Not as simple as most of the ones mentioned above, buy a good game that can be played with miniatures.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have been given a copy of iron and fire. Will try that first and see how it goes. Has anyone else got any experiance of this game and any reviews ?

I love Iron and Fire, but then I'm biased :) I hope you enjoy them.

Thank you Dave. Still awaiting them being dropped around. Hope to play this weekend. Do you have any quick play sheets at all for this ?

I fairness we did write those rules over 40 years ago. ;-)

I like Iron and Fire myself.

zenturtle07 Feb 2015 11:12 a.m. PST

Okay. Used the Iron and Fire rules last night. Great game.. got my rudder handed to me but really enjoyed it. Anyone know if it's available to buy as a .pdf file ?

bekosh01 May 2015 10:50 a.m. PST

I have never meet him & my opinion is based only my gaming experience. You can never go wrong with a David Manely naval game.

Hussar12321 Jul 2015 4:41 a.m. PST

Hammering Iron is my choice for an easy game, you can always do a quick mod for a larger or smaller games. Fast and furious.
