I'll be running the Victory or Death, December 1776 AWI mini campaign at Cold Wars using the Carnage and Glory Strategic and Tactical systems. If you plan on being at Cold Wars and would like to participate in the campaign drop me a note at dbonk@nc.rr.com and indicate if you'd prefer a British or American command. Each player will have one or more brigades under their command.

I expect to generate three 40mm games over the course of the weekend, one on Friday and two on Saturday. You can participate in the campaign but don't have to play in any of the tabletop games, even if your forces are engaged but I will need you at Cold Wars to issue strategic orders beyond the first battle. Alternatively you can just sign up to play in the battles…all the games are in the PEL and available for preregistration.

I will start the campaign in late January and we'll run through the first day or two of strategic movement and hopefully generate the first battle, which we'll fight on Friday night at Cold Wars. From there it's anybody's guess what will happen. The results of the first battle and subsequent strategic decisions will dictate battles two and three on Saturday.

You don't have to have any experience with the Carnage and Glory Tactical system to play in the campaign.

You are using Carnage and Glory Strategic for the campagin. I've not read these rules so would be interested how your running this. Would really enjoy playing/running an AWI campaign. So any information you have time to post on would be great. Thank you.

The Carnage and Glory Strategic campaign system is designed to work in tandem with the Tactical computer moderated system. After creating the army list for both sides in the Tactical system the files are transferred to the campaign system and initial deployments are made using a theater map broken into five mile hexes.

All movement is done using the hex reference numbers from the map. Unit movement, in four hour segments, is limited by their orders and fatigue is assigned depending on the duration of march. The system keeps track of attrition, sick and missing and accumulated fatigue, which are functions of march duration and compensating rest periods and supply availability. Weather, modified by the season of the year also plays a role in determining sick and missing.

Both sides receive intelligence from scouting contacts and from partisan sources.

Minor combats can be resolved within the campaign system, which determines a winner and loser and assigns combat losses as appropriate.

Major combat is undertaken by transferring the units in contact back into the CG Tactical system, with current strengths affected by attrition and fatigue. Once the battle is completed the units are transferred back into the campaign system, with battle losses, and the campaign continues. When originally created all units are assigned an experience and morale rating. The system amends those ratings as a result of battlefield experience, either up or down depending on the performance of the unit in the battle.

That's a quick overview of the system…I've skipped over some of the minor details but hopefully that gives you an idea of how the system works.

Wow, now that sounds very interesting. I did a quick search online for Carnage and Glory and all I found was links for Carnage and Glory II. When I reviewed the links they gave me the impression is was only for tactical one off battles. So not sure if I am finding the same thing you are describing above. But I will keep searching, it sounds perfect for what I'd like to do. Thank you

Ok I'm not dumb I'm just slow. hahahaha I found here on TMP that a David Bonk is going to do some more test playing at Cold Wars using AWI period. Seeing as how you sign your post as db, I'm guessing your not DB Cooper but David Bonk! lol

So I have a question about the "assigned experience and morale rating." Is that something the AI assigns to each unit or we can enter that information in at the start of the campaign.

I'd really love to test play the campaign but I won't be at Cold Wars. :-( So looking forward to hearing how it goes and can't wait for this to be released.
thank you

Yes, this a a playtest of the Strategic rules, which we playtested at Historicon 2014 using the Napoleonic system…assuming these tweaks to the system work out I think the system is getting close to being ready for prime time.

FYI, there are many Carnage and Glory events (including several AWI games) on the list for Cold Wars 2018. For details, please go to the discussion on the Cold Wars PEL.

Rather than start a new Carnage and Glory topic, I just updated an old one. Same veteran GMs; same great figures and terrain. I may post a more complete list later.

Enjoy the games. Hope to see you there.
