Haythornthwaite says, in Uniforms of Waterloo, that Prussian regular infantry (and ex-Reserve too I guess, as by 1815 these were all in the line) wore grey breeches in the winter and white in the summer. Is this thought to be right, and if so, what would have prevailed in 1815? I've always had the ex-Reserves in white before, otherwise with the grey or black shell jackets they just look too dull. But would they have been in summer garb in April 1815 when they were mobilised and marched west? |

Since mine are used for 1813 ( mostly late summer/fall and fowl weather campaign) and 1815 being early summary (so in transition) I have them in gray. My assumption/justification is that they would tend to preserve the "whites" for parade and very hot weather. my 2 cents MG |

I think it really is users choice. The new osprey on the Prussians in 1815 goes into depth about the massive supply troubles they were having even during the peace before the 100 days started. Some units were still in their old Westphalian/Russo-German Legion/Friekorps uniforms. I never realized how colorful an army the Prussians could be. |

The Mont St Jean website has all the regulars in grey. That's what I've painted mine. link [URL=http://s219.photobucket.com/user/tjm3/media/Calpe%20Prussians/IMG_7548.jpg.html]

Yeah, I seriously doubt that the Prussians had two sets of breeches for ANY unit, including Guard! |

no breeches but long trousers – those in white |

Cheers all. One of the points in favour of grey is that they look a bit less French – makes for a bit of a break in the painting. |

A pity that there are so few good miniatures about the Prussian army in campaign dress – here for example a contemporary picture of the Landecker Bilderhandschrift, Prussian Jäger of Leib Regiment – for more go for the book of Thomas Hemmann – Die Landecker Bilderhandschrift aus dem Jahr 1813, excellent value for many and a lot of plates in colour There could be also trousers in grey or unbleached linnen etc.

The disadvantage of the reserve infantry from a painter's perspective is that grey shell jackets and grey trousers make for a dull figure…if I wanted all-grey units I'd have done the ACW! Fortunately the ex-RGL and Berg units afford a bit of relief! |
