No regulations existed for the uniforms of the top brass, and 'guards' uniform with lots of 'egg' seems to have been popular amongst the most senior commanders but, does anyone know what was popular amongst generals of cavalry?

I'm not looking to represent anyone in particular, I'm just wondering if I can get away with, what might be termed, 'senior officers in green coats with egg' type figurines.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe kit out one of your cavalry generals in a Chevalier Guards uniform and say that he was a member of that regiment. The French did the same thing, judging by the portrait of Soubise shown in the Mollo book.

Maybe Angus Konstam can help you.

He wrote the two Osprey"s on the SYW Russians, And a nice rulesset, Der Kriegskunst.
I can't find his email for the moment, but it is somewhere on his website: link

There is a good article on the subject in the Russian language magazine "Arsenal" #1 in 1991 by A. Letin. There were no formal regulations until 1764, however the dress of Generals does seem to have some sanctioned conformity from 1745 forward, as orders were issued to Admirals in 1745 to conform their dress (except in color) to that worn by generals. The general officers would be dressed in a similar manner as other officers of the respective branches of cavalry and infantry. The field dress would be a bit simpler than full dress. The uniform would have some gold braid (similar to the Austrian, although the references say the only distinction in this "everyday" or "march" dress was the gold braided hats and possibly white feathers(as the Prussians). Infantry generals (but not Cavalry generals)would have a gold/black threaded sash.

I'd publish a picture if I knew how to put it in this post!

Thanks guys.

Waas', I have those books plus a few more. They are generally thunderous in their silence on the issue, which is why I asked.

latest two are just generals – Apraxin and Saltykov, the first one has an officer/general…
