The British Film Institute recently released a restored version of the 1972 film, Aguirre, the Wrath of God (directed by Werner Herzog, starring Klaus Kinski). Evidently, the North American Blu-ray will be available on March 17th, 2015. So, you can watch a mad German in the role of a mad Spaniard on St. Patrick's Day.

Aguirre may be found on the Amazon.

Great film!

I have neglected to provide the proper historical context. The movie is a fictionalized account of Pedro de Ursua's 1560 expedition in search of El Dorado, which went off the rails a bit.

I'm there, dude- Happy St. Patty's Day! The Amazon shall run…green with beer!

Yes, yes…this shall surely lead to 16th century skirmish gaming…

Werner Herzog eh…I assume there's a hefty dose of existential angst?

One of my favorite films, from one of my favorite directors. Cobra Verde is fantastic too, some good ideas for gaming in that.

Heart of Darkness with morions.

Agreed, one of my favorites.

Two scenes in particular will always stick with me: the unbroken line of hundreds of conquistadors and porters snaking over the ridges and valleys, and the monkeys scrambling over the slowly spinning raft.

Definitely worth watching again!

One of my favourite films. I have the Criterion version on DVD.

I've long dreamed of doing a big convention game with the raft snaking down the Amazon while being sporadically attacked by natives from the shoreline. And might as well throw in a landing and attack on a native village. One day…

I'd love to see this again.

"What are they saying?"

"'Meat is floating past our village!'"

Amazingly the real story of Aguirre even tops the madness depicted in the movie. Great film, though they should have left the cannon out of it.

Herzog and crew reportedly had to flee several places on the Amazon, leaving behind debts. I love the film.
