Found a nice New Year's gift for myself and anyone else interested in the 1878-1880 Afghan War: some high-quality online versions of original photos I'd never seen before, posted on a site called World Digital Library.

Here's one example, showing a Royal Artillery mountain-gun & crew beside a Royal Artillery 40lb. breechloader -- probably the lightest and heaviest guns used by the British during the war:

If you'd like to see more, please stop by my blog at:

…or if you prefer going directly to the source, you can head over to the "Afghan Wars" page at World Digital Library:

NOTE: some photos included in the collection will probably be recognized by those familiar with period sources on the Second Afghan War, but even if like me you are very familiar with most of the period sources, I think there's a chance you will still find at least a few photos you haven't seen before. I myself found a bunch.

Happy New year, and here's to a 2015 filled with discovering new historical resources!

The clarity is really nice to have. The elephant battery reminds me of the 20mm unit Heritage once produced.
Hope to start building units for 2nd Aghan War later this year. Appreciate your blog for its inspiration.

Glad to hear you enjoyed them, Jcfrog and Ogdenlulimus.

Also very happy to hear you've been enjoying my blog, Ogdenlulimus. Hearing it's helped encourage you to consider gaming the Second Afghan War definitely puts a smile on my face!
