…South Sudan for peacekeeping mission.

"China's first infantry battalion to South Sudan is set for departure, marking the country's first infantry to participate in a United Nations peacekeeping mission. A rally was held Monday in the city of Laiyang in east China's Shandong Province. The dispatch was approved by the Central Military Commission and its chairman Xi Jinping.

Previous Chinese peacekeepers were mainly engineering, transportation, medical service and security guard corps.

The 700-strong infantry battalion included 121 officers and 579 soldiers. Forty-three members have participated in peacekeeping missions before. An infantry squad composed of 13 female soldiers will participate in a peacekeeping mission for the first time…"

That's a lot of officers.

Really, though, depends on what you class as an 'officer'.

Chalfant24 Dec 2014 1:41 p.m. PST

Might include NCOs in the total "officers", or might be officer heavy with an eye for small unit dispersal. Hard to say.

Either way, peace keeping missions are one way to gain practical experience without invading your neighbor.

Lets see if they can sustain it that far from home

Chinese infantry squads are 13-strong? I thought they were smaller (like ~10), but still possessed 3 fire teams (China is, after all, where the USMC got the triangular squad idea).

"We have a SoaringDragon down, we have a SoaringDragon down"..

I don't wish them harm but it would make a very different scenario.

Noble 713--just curious: when did the Marines get the triangular squad idea from China?

The Chinese were the UN unit on Cyprus recently … I'd like to see them send troops to Syria, Iraq and A'stan to follow up on the UN's condemnations of the civilain deaths, human rights violations, war crimes, etc. in those regions. At the hands of fanatical islamists, jihadis terrorists, et al … There may be a lot of Deash, AQ, etc. … But there are a whole of Chinamen in uniform …..

@Katzbalger:

The Marine Raiders were the first to use 3 fire teams in WW2. The battalion commander of 2nd Raiders, Evans Carlson, had observed Communist guerrillas during his tours in China in the 1930's. This is also the origin of the Marine slogan "Gung Ho".

Stay safe out there, troops!

Will be interesting to see what ROEs the Chinese are willing to operate under…

Thanks, Noble 713--I'd known about Carlson's observation of the Chicoms in the 30's, but didn't realize the 3 team squad came from that.
