Fellow Gamers,

Please rate the following rulesets, from Entry Level to Expert Level, in terms of complexity vs. ease of play:

Black Powder
Might and Reason
Volley & Bayonet
King of the Battlefield
Warfare in the Age of Reason

I'm about to start reading H&M rules, and I'd like to start with the easier stuff, and add layers of detail as I get to know the basic mechanics.

Long time commiserator, first time player. Where to start, if I plan to eventually read all of these anyway? Black Powder is the public library's, and I own the rest of these. Start with the big shiny book with the bright pictures? Work my way towards the folios with the detailed charts?

I would suggest that there is not a great deal to chose betwen any of these in respect of complexity.

IMHO
Easiest to pick up and play to hardest
Volley and Bayonet
Black Powder
Warfare in the Age of Reason
But not much of a difference.

The other 2 I have never played

Come to a convention and play in a game. Where are you located? I'm tentatively planning on running Lobositz in Chicago at Little Wars in the Spring.

Located in PDX.

Thanks for the invite.

Thanks also for the info re: complexity.

Can't wait to try all of these.

Don't forget die kriegskunst easy to learn and fun to play, 40 to 1 ratio so units 16 to 24 average. My favourite set by miles

I started my SYW gaming with Koenig Krieg v2 because thats what the group played. Then I moved and played Age of Reason because that's what our group played. Then I moved again and played the Shako SYW variant because, you guessed it, that's what the group plays. When I play at home its Minden Rose with slight modifications.

As you see, at least for me, if you want to play SYW you play what the group plays. I have too large of a SYW collection not to play it in some form even if I have to bite the bullet and play rules I don't care for; Shako, Black Powder etc. I don't have any experience with any other rule sets you mentioned. Of the the ones I have played, easiest to hardest

Minden Rose
AoR
Shako
KK v3

Thanks for the info.

I looked up Minden Rose (free PDF!), Koenig Krieg, and Die Kriegkunst.

Minden Rose looks like a nice introductory set to start with. Koenig Krieg and Die Kriegkunst both go on the list of possible future SYW ruleset purchases.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Rank & File is another excellent set that's easy to learn.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It just so happens that RaF is on sale at North Star.

After reading about half a dozen TMP threads, I've decided to order these. Cheers.

I think I'll start with Minden Rose, Rank and File and Black Powder.

I hope this helps those that are looking at getting into Koenig Krieg :)

Koenig Krieg is available as both a PDF and a book. For the PDF go to siegeworksstudios.com.au and for the paperback book go here link

Light Bos are now out at dayofbattle.com

Action level is for battalions with a company being the maneuver unit. Published is for AWI but the next book will cover F&I and 7YW.

I am looking for a few interested persons who would like a pdf version to read and review. Upon completion of the review I would send them a signed copy.

If interested please pm me.

Thanks
