"Outgoing US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel authorized the deployment of up to 1,300 American troops to Iraq early next year to assist and advise Iraqi and Kurdish forces in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS), the Pentagon said on Friday. "Their mission will be to train, advise and assist Iraqi security forces. This deployment is part of the additional 1,500 troops that the president authorized in November," Press Secretary John Kirby told reporters at a Pentagon briefing.
