The Battle For Northern Germany March – May 1945

"The enemy thinks he is safe behind this great river obstacle. We all agree that it is a great obstacle; but we will show the enemy that he is far from safe behind it. This great Allied fighting machine, composed of integrated land and air forces, will deal with the problem in no uncertain manner.

And having crossed the Rhine, we will crack about in the plains of Northern Germany, chasing the enemy from pillar to post. The swifter and more energetic our action the sooner the war will be over, and that is what we all desire: to get on with the job and finish off the German war as soon as possible.

Over the Rhine, then, let us go. And good hunting to you all on the other side.'"

The option to field a Marine-Grenadierkompanie, backed by imposing rail-mounted heavy FlaK guns, Panzerkampfgruppe Wallenberg, equipped with night-fighting Panther tanks and Jagdpanther tank-hunters, and Panzerkampfgruppe von Benningsen, armed with Panther and Panzer IV tanks.

Huh, I didn't think anyone had found evidence of Jagdpanthers equipped with the IR systems?

Optional rules for fighting battles at night.

Well, if you're going to give the Krauts IR gear, you'd better allow them to fight at night!

What garbage….I wonder if there are options for the germs surrendering on turn 2 after the barrage on turn 1? Or jacking it in the moment a squadron of Crocodiles rock up?

Yes! You too can field both of the infrared Panthers that actually made it to the battlefield. Will you be able to get them to actually work, unlike their historical crews? Or will those crews emulate their forebears, and bail at the first opportunity, and swap clothes with the nearest farm labourer?

gives Battlefront a great new line in figures:
packs of furtive looking, young farm/factory workers in badly fitting civilian clothes, strangely unfamilar with farm equipment or animals.

I think this is the moment FoW officially jumped the shark.

I think you're right, Tuscaloosa. I was big into flames about 6-7 years ago then switched to platoon sized games since. I revisited flames earlier this year and was flabbergasted that seemingly every firefight has a book now. And my old books were totally void because all the points had drastically changed. I am all for capitalism and don't begrudge a company for trying to make a buck, but really? Night panthers? This is just too "GW" for my taste. I'll stick to my 28s

PiersBrand19 Dec 2014 6:25 p.m. PST

There wasnt any IR equipped vehicles deployed operationally on the Western Front.

PiersBrand19 Dec 2014 6:34 p.m. PST

Do the Allies get to use their "TABBY" sets in this?

basileus6619 Dec 2014 11:11 p.m. PST

Think of this supplement as a What-if, and you will be fine. I don't play FoW, by the way. It's not my cup of tea. However, I do not find offensive that they are exploring counterfactuals. I would have preferred they would have tried their hand at an hypothetical WWIII in the 80s though.

PiersBrand20 Dec 2014 3:34 a.m. PST

Depends if they are presenting information as fact rather than fiction…

Dont mind kewl toys, but when its accompanied by dodgy history, thats when more myths start.

basileus6620 Dec 2014 7:50 a.m. PST

Yeah, you are right Piers. Good caveat.

As long as their is a market … and it makes a profit … In the end all businesses are in business to make $$$ … bottomline … At least that is what I remember from my distant University days old fart … with 2 business degrees, I was bound to remember something …

I think this is the moment FoW officially jumped the shark.

They did that lo-ong ago with Midwar Monsters.

Damon.

Wolfprophet21 Dec 2014 10:30 a.m. PST

I've always kinda looked at FoW as historical fiction. Enjoyable, but not accurate.

There's probably a couple of ways to look at this, and it will depend on how the history portion is written. First off, Germany did deploy their IR gear on a few occasions – granted the 100% confirmed ones were on the Eastern, not Western front. So if the Clausewitz units are written in a manner where they "must" have IR gear, that's likely inaccurate. However, if it is an "option" – then that's another discussion entirely.

While Battlefront has indeed released a lot of supplements, they haven't released one for every engagement. There wasn't a separate release for the Colmar pocket, so Audie Murphy got lumped in with the infantry lists in the Bulge series.

As to Wolfprophets "historical fiction" bit, I know that the force organizations are generally pretty accurate (or at least strive to be). As to the accuracy of the overall game mechanics, that can be debated fiercely on many levels as can the mechanics of any system…
