It takes skill to produce whites of eyes in 28mm, even more to produce the pupils. I cannot do it. However…..We all know that, on the horse, that is a mistake. Even a tiny bit of white only appears if the horse is terrified or dying. On humans…I have given up. I recently showed Ponsonby with a divergent squint and an expression suggesting the lancer has just got him. In 28mm, if you use a decent wash to darken the eye socket, the eye itself will not show and does not need to. Positive vibes here. The painter has made a great job of the figures otherwise. Nice highlights on the green, nice buttons on the overalls. He/she could not do anything about the Front Rank right arm seen on all cavalry, thicker than the thigh! Do not do eyes on horses, other than a black pupil (on a grey I might do the iris and then a large pupil). On humans, do not even try, or do not go beyond a dot for the pupil alone….if you are really skilled……. Some can do it, as we have seen. All three are riding chestnuts? Not a bay to be seen? |

It takes skill to produce whites of eyes in 28mm, even more to produce the pupils. I cannot do it. Oh, I think you can. I think the problem with your eyes is proportion. You should go look yourself in the eye in the mirror for a bit. You will notice that the pupil is not a little dot in a sea of white, it occupies about 50-60% of the surface of the eye. Yours simply aren't big enough. Here's what I do: I paint the eye first. Paint the whole "eye area" with white. Add a (generous) pupil. Basically, paint a vertical band of white, then one of whatever color you use for the pupil, then another of white. Then paint the flesh around it to define the eye. I add a thin line of red-brown around the eye as well, but I'm crazy. Also, I don't paint eyes on most figures. Napoleonic shakos tend to have visors, which hide the eyes in most wargame situations (e.g., players are standing around a table). So why spend the time painting them? Generally only generals get eyes. |

I don't paint the eyes for 28 mm and below, so far I know only one painter who realy could do this convincingly well, the rest is ruining (in my opinion) the faces, less is more in this case |

I liked them – a wash over the eyes maybe, but otherwise they look good |
