I'm looking for some good officer names for my Saxe-Oldburg forces. Suggestions would be appreciated.

RittervonBek18 Dec 2014 4:34 a.m. PST

Get a list of regimental names e.g. Bavarian or Austrian. Mix and match the elements. Polish and Czech beer brand names might also be of use. Good fun all round!

You'll find a good list of Austrian generals here:

Look for cast names of German tv series.

OSchmidt18 Dec 2014 6:02 a.m. PST

Is Saxe Oldburg an Imagi-Nation?

If so let me know I've got over 100 I use in my own Imaginations.

Ill send you the unit names too.

Be advised all of them are horrible puns or humorous names. Kind of Like Peter Young and his Steinzeit regiment.

If you want realistic names try the Berlin phone book.

JCFrog and Oschmidt have good suggestions. Another one is to look up championship soccer (or whatever sport the relevant nation plays) teams -- the internet is a wealth of such data.

Check the cast list for 'Allo Allo tv series….von Flockenstoffen has led my armies to many a defeat!

BombAlleySAM18 Dec 2014 7:36 a.m. PST

OSchmidt – I was hoping to use Saxe-Oldburg as a nation. I hope I am not treading on anyone's toes.
Your officer and unit names would be a great help also.

Thanks to everyone else for their suggestions.

What about Schweinsteiger!! I always get a kick out of saying that.

CLDecker18 Dec 2014 8:33 a.m. PST

Hoploch is one, part of my family came from Prussia.

OSchmidt18 Dec 2014 8:44 a.m. PST

Dear Bomb Alley

Send me your snail-mail to sigurd@eclipse.net and I'll send them off to you in a few days.

To spur you on here are a few.

Prince of Saxe-Burlap
Prince of Schleswig Beerstein
General von Hesse-Hydrox
General von Hesse-Herbox
General Katzenjammer
General Alt-MacDonald
General Jung- MacDonald
General von Knyppentuck
Prince of Zweibak
Prince of Hesse Hyjnx
Prine of Saxe-Hillbilliehausen

That should give you a start.

OSchmidt18 Dec 2014 8:51 a.m. PST

Oh yeah, if you want I'll send you the ones I made up for my French and British style Imagi-Nations and I'll try and write down the ones I have for my Italianate state, the Grand Duchy of the Grand Duke of Gorgonzola.

What scale are your figures in? If they're 25-28mm I'll send you the colors and standards I made up for them too.

For example the color for the AltMacdonald Regiment has roundels on which are shown what he had on his farm, and refers to the marching song of the Regiment.

The Jung MacDonald Regiment also refers to it's marching song and is a field of 100 bottles on a shelf.

Count Pilsner
Baron von Weihenstephaner
General Spaten
Count von Einbecker
Major General Doppelbeck
Baron von Ayinger und Brau-Hell
Lieutenant General Kolsch
Count Alt
Prince Schlenkerla und Rauchbier
General Weisse

There is a common thread here

OSchmidt18 Dec 2014 12:11 p.m. PST

Dear Frederick

Yes I can see how you brewed them up.

They flow from a common source.

Don't get all hopped up about.

OSchmidt18 Dec 2014 12:13 p.m. PST

Dear Frederick

I'm glad you could tap into that source.

They just flowed and flowed

Like a headful of froth

You could try the Fantasy Name Generator to get random German names, then add a title and perhaps a "von" to make it more officer-like.

"Balthasar Rudolph von Schenckendorf"

(GREAT NAME!!!)

wink

Fridericus19 Dec 2014 3:10 a.m. PST

I like real telling names, like
Oberst von Doesbaddel (e.g. Low German "von Stupid"),
General von Schreckental,
Lieutenant General von Dickleib.
There is no limit to your (or my) imagination!

grommet3720 Dec 2014 10:52 p.m. PST

I've been reading a lot about Frederick the Great, and I was wondering which place-names were German and which were not, so I looked up some of the suffixes, like -itz, -au, and -dorf.

Pretty interesting (German toponymy):

I believe Charles Grant's book " Charge" has a General Trincksblut und Eisen-Essen. My favourite!
