In preparation for wargaming the Battle of Chancellorsville, I've made a command stand featuring Stonewall Jackson on the famous Plank Road while flanking the Union 11th Corps.

More pics and a write up on Jackson's contribution to Lee's finest victory can be found here on my blog:

Sweet job!

tigrifsgt17 Dec 2014 12:43 p.m. PST

Old Tom never looked better.

KTravlos17 Dec 2014 12:57 p.m. PST

Very good looking miniature

ironicon17 Dec 2014 12:59 p.m. PST

He was 39 when he was wounded. He did'nt have any gray in his beard. The bill on his cap was a "McDowell" type.I was a re-enacter in the "Stonewall Brigade" for over 20 years. I know a good deal about "Old blue light"(he had blue eyes).

So, you don't like anything about this stand? Looks nicely done to me.

ironicon17 Dec 2014 2:37 p.m. PST

It's a very good fig. If it is supposed to be Jackson then it doen't work. I didn't say I don't like anything about the figure.Yes it is nicely done.

Absolutely gorgeous! Quite possibly my most admired commander of the war. Outstanding work.

As a painter of figures, as I am sure most everybody on this site is.
When painting a figure that size who has a dark beard, I use dark grey as a highlight so the detail can be seen….just saying.
I think it is a beautifully done piece.

Well, who can argue with a reenactor…

AussieAndy17 Dec 2014 6:47 p.m. PST

Lovely work, but I'm not sure that he looks sufficiently crazy. Maybe have him sucking on a lemon?

ACWBill17 Dec 2014 9:55 p.m. PST

Beautiful work.

He was 39 but had gone through a lot of stress. And once again, also our models games and miniatures are condensed models of reality, not reality. The miniature does a good job capturing some of the elements that made Jackson-Jackson. Chanzy you have done an excellent job. The miniature evokes Jackson as a determined commander.Once more good show.

Thank you all very very much for the kind words!
The support here on TMP is amazing – thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts. Wish you all a Merry Christmas!

@AussieAndy: yeah, that lemon would have been a nice touch :0)

@Ironicon: Appreciate your comments, I've got a good friend here in Stockholm who moved over from the US, and he used to re-enact in a Massachusetts unit – it's hard to get all the little details in there on a 28mm figure, but certainly the beard could be highlighted brown and not grey. I'll probably change that to do Old Blue Light justice. We'll let Lee keep the monopoly on grey beards for now…

Kind regards from Stockholm,
Sören

@CHANZY Yeah it really IS A NICE FIGURE. Sorry if I was too picky.

I played chess with Jackson (re-enacter) and was giving you my honest reaction.

We never played on Sundays.

Fantastic work – I think the grey in the beard will work very well as a highlight given the distance that most people will be from the stand when they see it

I was afraid to say this, but in the VMI museum they have the hat he was wearing at Chancellorsville. It is a gray with a blue band around the crown. The band is edged in gold. Hope my additional 2 cents does not add insult to injury.

Jim.

GoodOldRebel18 Dec 2014 3:43 p.m. PST

awesome stand …either way

ironicon19 Dec 2014 8:57 a.m. PST

At VMI they also have the "rubberized" coat he was wearing when he was mortally wounded. There is a hole in it.
For the Brigade,
Jim

@ironicon: it's all good, I really appreciate that someone has this level of knowledge and takes out time to share it. I've been promised a spot in the re-enactment unit for a one day trial experience if/when I go to the US, and one could only hope to come face to face, let alone play chess, with such a historical character as Stonewall. Trust your buddy had blue eyes and a craving for lemons:0)

I did notice that Don Troiani also had Jackson wearing a grey hat, plus the rubberized black coat in his "Before the storm" painting on the Plank Road sequence, leading up to the flanking assault. Do you know if Jackson would be wearing this coat during the afternoon of the charge on the 11th Corps as well?

VMI will be a definite point on my itinerary when I visit the state!

Merry Christmas Jim

Kind regard,
Sören

Thanks so much for your kind words. Your heart is in the right place. VMI, Jackson, and the Stonewall Brigade as you can tell, mean a lot to me and I take them very seriously.

Your friend,
JHD
