December 16th. The start of the Battle of the Bulge. Surprised, outnumbered, and out-gunned the American GIs showed what they were made of. They fought the Germans to a standstill until reinforcements could arrive to drive the enemy back. It was absolutely their finest hour. God bless them all. |

My Dad was in the 82nd Airborne during that battle.During a night attack by the 9Th SS Panzer Grenadiers they lost the town they were defending, but counter-attack and took it back. He said the next morning he looked out at the open fields and saw dozens of dead Germans, frozen where they fallen. On Jan 8th his company was ordered to assault a ridgeline the Germans were holding, supported by a battery of 88mm guns. His company started the attack with 128 men and when they had taken the ridge they only had 33 men left. My Dad received a purple heart for his wounds received for that assault. |

The green 106th was from the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut area. Three of my friends had their fathers captured during that debacle. One was nearly executed by SS, then was in a rail yard bombed by the 8th Air Force. |
