"Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania strike £240.00 GBP million of arms deals as they watch Vladimir Putin's Ukrainian adventure with alarm. Russia's meddling in Ukraine has delivered a wake-up call on defence spending to small Baltic states which spent half a century under Soviet occupation and now fear the Kremlin's territorial ambitions. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are on heightened alert as Russian military planes and warships skirt their airspace and sea borders on a daily basis in what they call "unprecedented" Russian activity. Nato said its Baltic air patrol intercepted more than 30 Russian aircraft on Monday alone over the Baltic Sea and off the coast of Norway…"

Wow a whole 6 Leopard tanks. Putin will be scared! If these countries had any idea, they'd pool their militaries into one force to get economies of scale and get rid of duplication of military bureaucracy. |

Someone needs to go all Richard M. Nixon on them, and send a squadron or three of B-52s to orbit off Russia for awhile, so they need to worry about their defenses too. Of course, we'll have to wait a couple of years for that to occur. A real shame those Vulcans have all be stricken from the rosters. |

Actually the number of tanks is zero, the "Leopards" are turretless vehicles used to train drivers to save wear and tear on the CV90's and Panzerhaubitze 2000s. Buying MBT's would be a waste of money, the limited resources are far better spent on ATGMs, mines and effective artillery. |

Yeah, it's not exactly tank country is it? Good to see nations taking the threat seriously but with tiny populations there's not actually much they can do I guess. |

Well you can always go the Swiss model and arm every citizen. Plus if I remember right the Baltic States carried on several successful guerrilla wars against the Soviets every time they got occupied. They just got worn down by masses of Soviet troops and no outside aid. But an RPG in every house does wonders to the enemies state of mind. You never know when you are driving down a road when you might get fired on. |

The Swiss are highly heterogenous; the Baltics are not. Arming the potential fifth column inside your own country doesn't seem like a good idea to me. The resulting civil war would provide a wonderful excuse for Russia to intervene. |

You mean "homogeneous", right? |
