I have decided that my next 10mm project will be building the forces and indeed maybe the terrain for the Altar of Freedom model of The Battle of Gaine's Mill.

My intention is to use 10mm Pendraken miniatures and my condensed model of reality will essentially have brigades represented by the regiments in that brigade that rendered the most exceptional service (if there is such).

I would like to ask for three things for help

1) A good read on the battle. If it is available in Kindle it would be great.

2) Suggestions for exceptional units in the battle in each brigade?

3) The Altar of Freedom scenario map says that this is a 3x3 foot game, but in the final pages it says a 4x4. Which one is correct? (I am afraid I am that lacking in space)

I've put together this scenario for Volley and Bayonet. My main sources were Battle and Leaders and "Tto the Gates of Richmond" by Sears as well as walking the ground. In regards to exceptional units, I'd nominate the U.S. Regulars and, of course, the 1st USSS. Keep in mind, that a large portion of the Confederate forces are in their first action.

Ok so after some research on my own I found this Kindle Available sources

The Richmond Campaign of 1862: The Peninsula and the Seven Days (Military Campaigns of the Civil War)

The Peninsula Campaign and the Necessity of Emancipation: African Americans and the Fight for Freedom (Civil War…

On The Confederate Left at Gaines's Mill

Are these any good?

I can't recommend either, but I think you want a book from a more straight-forward military perspective, not a social history. There is an Osprey book on the Campaign. That might be better suited for you.

As for the map, I recommend just looking at historical maps and judging how big a space you need. I'm guessing the 3x3 will be sufficient. I think the whole front was about 2 miles which translates into just over 2 feet at the game scale of 1" = 150 yards.

It is indeed a 3x3 tabletop! The appendix in the back incorrectly lists it as 4x4.

An excellent resource that you may not be familiar with is a book that was written a few years ago about the Seven Days. It is titled "Extraordinary Circumstances, the Seven Days Battles", by Brian Burton. I believe it is published by The Indiana Univ. Press.
The book is really the only dedicated tactical study of the battles that I am aware of. I think you would find it a good resource for any of the actions.
In addition, the Civil War Trust published an excellent map on this battle about 5 years ago. This is readily available.
