Anyone else pick this bad boy up? I'm not sure it's fair to refer to it as a "miniature" given that it's about 9 inches tall. My girlfriend picked it up for me for our anniversary last month and I've been taking my time and savoring the project. I'm keeping a log of my progress on my gaming blog, here's the latest update: link

I have one. Great fig. It's fully assembled and primed, just waiting for the final paint, which I'm still deciding on. Because of its size, it needs a special paint scheme, so I'm taking my time to be sure I get it right.

Did you do anything special regarding priming? I've painted some of the smaller figures straight out of the packaging like it says you can, but haven't been impressed with the results.

Mine's going to be mostly pale olive green, with a pale pink wash to the tentacles, gills and eye-sockets.

I used Krylon Flat Black (my go-to primer) and applied it in several dry coats to minimize any reaction with the plastic. I had no problem with the body, however, the head still reacted and got tacky. To fix that, I used baking soda to kill the tackiness. Then after a 24 hour wait, I primed the entire fig with black gesso. Worked perfectly.

I never paint Bones without primer. Even though I've read many accounts of people not using primer, I'm not convinced that the un-primered surface will hold paint properly over the long run of handling while gaming over the years.

Krylon Flat Black – aerosol can, I'm assuming?

And for the tackiness, do you just sprinkle the baking soda over the piece in question?

Night Owl III07 Dec 2014 5:38 p.m. PST

I will second the recommendation for black gesso on all the Reaper Bones vinyl minis. I use it on all of them now. It "shrinks" so you don't lose any detail.

Have fun with Cthulhu and post pics when your done!

Yes, Krylon Flat Black in the aerosol can. I used to use Ultra Flat Black, but for some reason I can't readily find it anymore, so I use regular flat black. As for the baking soda, whatever the size of the piece, I use an appropriately scaled container and completely cover the tacky piece in it. I let it sit in there for at least 24 hours and then take it out to check the tackiness. If it feels dry (non tacky), brush off the excess baking soda and let it sit in the open air for a couple hours, then go to the gesso phase (I use Liquitex gesso). If it still feels tacky, place it back and bury it again for another 24 hours until the tackiness is gone (then air dry & gesso as mentioned). Some things take longer, others less time in the baking soda. This is due to the type of plastic and the reaction caused by the solvents in the paint. The gesso also acts as a final sealing "skin" coating (working as Night Owl III said above).

Awesome, making a run to the craft store tonight for Krylon (I've newly returned to painting miniatures after a long absence, so needing to replace a lot of my supplies) and gesso.

Should be painting by mid-week, I think!

Looking good so far. :)

After some delays (curse this thing called "real life" I finally have an update on Cthulhu! I've laid down a basecoat of Craft Smart "Spanish Olive" over a coat of black primer, and so far he's looking pretty good! My roommate, who is not a painter, took a look and said I picked a great color for Cthulhu…I told him I haven't even begun to paint!

Pics are here: link

Now, to give him a dark olive green wash, highlight back up to Spanish Olive, then the real fun begins…
