Gents.

Hoping for some guidance. Been interested in getting into Egyptian gaming (blame Warlord's Egyptian line), but I really want to read more about the military history of the period -- don't really know much about it. What with thousands of years, and multiple Kingdoms – early, middle, and new -- it's hard to know where to get started.

Can anyone suggest the best books on the topic for a noob?

thanks
brian

I will second the recommendation of Yadin's work. Certainly not inexpensive, but worth every penny.

Osprey books good start covering Middle and New kingdom. Also see Kadesh title from osprey.
Bridgit McDermots book Warfare in Ancient Egypt also great.

The Egyptians had a lot of pretty long wars (or several wars with the same people over a long time).

Maybe when you start your Egyptian army you should buy an army for one of their period enemies, so they have someone to fight?

That said I like Ptolemy's Egypt the most myself, but thats dreadfully greek in its military.

The kickstarter mentioned by Doctor has great figures, but the figures draw as much from Hollywood as from historical sources. That being said, there are some that would work, depending on what you want to model.

SO I finally found a copy of the Yadin book at a reasonable price to shop to Australia. Thanks (I think!) to timurilank and nnascati for putting me onto this book that I had never heard of and matching an keen area of interest.

It arrived today! (went airmail when I was expecting it by sea in late February). Woo-hoo! I have my reading set for the near future. Thanks again to timurilank and nnascati!
