Games Workshop has started taking orders for a new Warhammer 40k starter set, Shield of Baal: Deathstorm. This set pits Blood Angels vs. the ravenous hordes of the Tyranids on the planet Phodia.

The set is priced at $125 USD, which isn't too bad considering the models included inside the set, such as a Dreadnaught and a Carnifex. That price becomes even better if you and a friend decide to split the cost.
One interesting note, though, are the bases. In-particular, the Brood Lord comes on an oval base, and the Space Marines come on 32mm bases

Very nice.

Tempting….but…..

the Space Marines come on 32mm bases

I'm wondering if this is a breaking change for the tournament Fanbois? Is this still a rule?

"Citadel miniatures are normally supplied with plastic bases. If so, they must be glued onto their bases before they can be used in the game. Some players like to mount their models on impressive scenic bases. As mounting your models on different sized might affect the way they interact with the rules, make sure before the game your opponent does not mind."

Pricewise it is very tempting.

The bases are causing a huge uproar. There has not been an official announcement on them and therefore a lot of speculation. Is it just for space marines? Is it just for "Jump troops/Flyers"? How will this effect base manufacturers? etc…

Mithmee03 Dec 2014 1:45 p.m. PST

Well that is just GW way of screwing those individuals over.

Plus jsut wait until GW comes out with:

If your models are not based on GW bases you can't use them at any GW event.

That is GW for you.

Bob Runnicles03 Dec 2014 2:00 p.m. PST

Well, considering that there ARE no official 'GW Events' now I think that problem solves itself. Plus nobody is being forced to rebase; in fact the larger bases (for Marines only from the rumors) are a double-edged sword. On the one hand they allow a figure to be attacked in melee by more opponents, on the other hand they increase the area covered when spread out at maximum cohesion limits. Personally I don't care either way :)

I thinks scale creep of basic GW figures over the decades has made 25mm bases too small and hence the increase in base size. The 25mm bases originally created for RT-era Beakies have not changed over 25 years and have been gradually 'outgrown.'

I don't see it as that big of a deal. After all, it wasn't that long ago when 40mm based miniatures such as Terminators and Wraithguard were on 25mm bases. We'll get used to it. Those with power armored Space Marines on 25mm bases need not rebase them since GW no longer does official tournaments, and if an opponent won't play you because of the base size you're probably better off not playing him anyway.

$1.75 USD worth of paper and cardboard and $0.45 USD worth of plastic for a paltry $125.00 USD! WOW what a FABulous deal!!!!! :)

Wolfprophet05 Dec 2014 9:26 a.m. PST

The base change was purely for aesthetics. A lot of marine models either stick over the edge of the 25mm base or suffer from a bad case of wobbly model syndrome because it lacks surface area to keep the model stable without a weight. Larger size will not only alleviate that issue, but allow for more room to put a washer or other weight in the bottom of it. Not a bad move really, but the only model's I'd rebase are my jump pack troops that fall down if you look at them wrong….

Bob Runnicles12 Dec 2014 7:56 a.m. PST

I'd be tempted to rebase my Tyranid Hormagants if it was an acceptable option – those things fall over even with weights in the bases if you look at them at all, let alone look at them wrong.

Oddly enough the price is so good it's actually a massive discount over 1996 prices (I calculate roughly $200 USD MSRP at 1996 prices).

Even though I dislike modern GW there's no reason to cry over what is actually a good priced box set.

I bought it. The Broodlord it comes with is cool and the oval Carnifex base looks pretty good compared with the 60mm one.

Yeah, nobody likes the "Why God, Why???!!!" version:
