I just flew in on the red-eye from Phoenix after 12 days in Arizona, the last 3 on the Navajo reservation – Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly. While there I found mention of the Long Walk, under Kit Carson. I have to assume that such a forced mass migration of Navajos was preceded by hostilities. Does anyone know of books or online sources about Navajo-Army fighting? |

Thanks Chalfant. If I weren't so fried from the plane ride I might have found that myself. |

Its fine… I am reading that as several smallish skirmishes, I am not personally familiar with the Navajo conflicts. Chalfant |

Oddly enough I was just talking to my friend about this campaign,I used to be the editorial cartoonist for the"Navajo-Hopi Observer" for 11 years on the side . The book is "The Kit Carson Campaign" the last great Navajo war.The author is Clifford E. Trafzer, thru University of Oklahoma press-1982.Also check university of Nebraska -or Arizona or New mexico press. Also " the Guidon book store in Scottsdale if it's still there, and E-bay. It's a good book,Kit single handed turned the Navajos from hunters into farmers. He is not well liked on the res. Monument valley and the Canyon de Chelly is awesome. |

About 3000 Navajo surrendered but as many fled. They hid out around Navajo Mountain. The nearby park is also worth a visit. The Great Walk is still remembered by the Nation. Robert |

Gregory F. Michno "Encyclopedia of Indian Wars" and "Forgitten Fights" You' ll find detailed accounts of every clash between army and navajos on the above mentioned books…furthemore, while being a must for every fan of indian wars, this two books are among the best and more technical military books i read also from a wargamer point of view. |

Most of my research in that area for my series of First Nation Military history articles showed numerous fights with the Spanish and a few with the Mexicans. Most of their conflicts were with the Apache and other local tribes. I have a great book on Pueblo War Shields which is a very interesting read. The article is under the "Our Place Under the Sun" series Southwest region. they were a lot more warlike than modern perceived history. |
