…and enhanced armored vehicles.

"Marines of the Russian Black Sea Fleet will receive modern equipment and weaponry to ensure stability in the southern region, the commander of the Russian Navy's coastal troops said. Gen. Alexander Kolpachenko told reporters that Russia's Marines are being rearmed and receive more new equipment and vehicles.

"New BTR-82A armoured personnel carriers are provided for the troops, and the Baltic Fleet has received them. The Black Sea Fleet has replaced BMP-2s with BTR-80s," he said.

Recently it was difficult to re-equip and re-arm the Black Sea Marines, but now it is possible, and it will be carried out to ensure stability in the southern areas. …we're planning to create a high mobility amphibious combat vehicle for operating in any regions and in any weather conditions, including in the Arctic area," he said.

"The Marine Infantry is mobile, well-equipped and trained for operations in amphibious assaults. The Marine demonstrates its skills in exercises and marches to ensure Russia's national interests in all oceanic theaters of military operations," Kolpachenko said.

So what lucky squad will receive all this new gear or will they spread it out amongst several squads for sake of old socialist equality?

Let's see how this modernizing proceeds if oil continues to be below $70 USD dollars a barrel.

Russia needs oil to be at $100 USD/barrel to break even with their national expenditures. Russia has already announced cutbacks in medical care, which has caused nationwide protests…

This new mini Cold War will be won economically, again.

Latest numbers are $66 USD a barrel (and still trending down). That, and Russia's ironclad hold on the natural gas trade to Europe is getting cracked wide open. Not a real good time to go on a buying spry…

People were saying it could go as low as $50 USD – $70 USD a barrel, a week, or two ago.

Today, I saw some conjecture of $30 USD a barrel, but suspect that may just be hyperbole.

I'd love to see it back at that level again, for a decade, or three.

Apparently, OPEC doesn't like the competition from the oil-shale suppliers in North America, so is trying to crush them.
