I know that academic publishers tend to be expensive, but wow. At that price, maybe we could all chip in to buy one copy and pass it around. It might be my turn to read it before the end of the century.

Wait a while and a softcover might come out. I balked at the price of Fief and Vassals at $100 USD, but later found a softcover edition for a much more reasonable price.

Damon.

And the local uni library will only get the e-version. She's good, but my goodness. I can't help thinking they could make twice the money by selling at a quarter the price.

Brill is pretty (in)famous for their pricing, as a comparison
Sennewald's massive work on the Saxon army in the TYW is almost 900 pages in two volumes with some 600 illustrations for 160 Euros…

Agreed. I suspect that Brill may not be recognising that the potential market for the book is wider than academic purchasers. Then again Brill is still in business, so, presumably, it must have some understanding of its market.

The problem that I have with waiting for a paperback edition is that, if I am going to have to pay a whole lot for a paperback, I usually prefer to go the whole hog and shell out for the hardback (while again reminding my wife and kids not to sell my books off by the kilogram when I am dead).

At least when you shell out the big bucks to an academic publisher, you can usually have reasonable expectations that there will be some scholarly rigour in the research and writing, and that the publisher will have actually employed a proper editor.

>what is it in comparison with the amount that one forks over for miniatures

Well…
With books, reading time is another factor to consider.

I really would like to read this work, but when I have around 110€ of cash slated for my hobby interests, I do have to decide where they do the most good for me. I will definitely put this book on my list, but I fear it will stay there, as it competes with some 1000 other books :-(

That said, interesting reviews may still change my mind.
