"The Navy is beginning to work on a a next-generation carrier-launched fighter jet to replace the existing F/A-18 Super Hornet and Growler aircraft by 2030 and supplement the F-35C the Pentagon is still developing, service officials said. The Navy effort, called the F/A-XX study, includes early work on the desired technological capabilities for the new aircraft. The idea is to have a new aircraft ready and producible by the time existing F/A-18s reach their end-of-service dates. Navy officials emphasize that the early work is in the very early stages and purely a conceptual effort to explore alternatives. The Navy is analyzing industry proposals on the F/A-XX it started collecting two years ago. The new jet is a beauty, as is the one for the USAF too. Forget the designation of it, but something like the F-XX, if I recall correctly. |

I think he was referring to the F/A-XX illustrated further into the article. Wouldn't be surprised if the Navy goes with more (and upgraded) Super Bugs in the interim. True enough, the F-35 was not their first choice (by a long shot). |

2015 would be better, but we probably can't afford them now, anyway. |

I honestly do not expect the money to be there to sustain the F-35 fleet in meaningful numbers, let alone acquire and develop new airframes. |

15 years development is an awfully short cycle, didn't the F35 take 25, and the F22 take at least 20? |

Here's the FAXX rendering I've been looking at. Quite a beaut.
