I have GW LoTR Oliphant model that I'm afraid to paint. I've started twice, but I get painters block whenever I try to work on it.

I also can't bring myself to do more than prime my French Carabiniers. It's fear of failing to paint a great model well. I avoid them and paint something easy.

Do you have models you can't bring yourself to paint?

McWong7322 Nov 2014 3:22 a.m. PST

Interesting, I too have been gun shy about painting infinity figures. And some large resin model kits, but mostly because they were rather pricey and I've yet to have the time to prep them.

Chris Palmer22 Nov 2014 4:24 a.m. PST

Yep, I hear you. My current ones are 4 of the Repaer Bones Kickstarter Giants. They're just so big… And so much detail.
I also have the Eureka Turtle model with the frogs riding in a howdah-like affair on the back, from their Frog Warrior range. Still unassembled in its bag.
I don't know if it's fear of messing the stuff up, so much as they all seem like they'll take Herculean efforts that will take forever to finish when I commit to plunging in.

I too know how you feel. I bought Conquest Miniatures' "Lasr of the Mohicans" character set, and put off painting them because I wasn't sure I could do them justice.

I have had the Foundry figure set in Victorian time of the rat catcher. He has been primed for over 10 years. I look at him every now and then and have seen home painted several ways. They are all great looking paint jobs but I just don't know where I want to begin with regards to clothes and such.

So, yes, I know how you feel. And I have a lot more figures I have on hold for the same reason.

I get braver the more I paint but then I don't try to paint for competition. I just like having a nice looking table. It helps my friends and I enjoy the game more I think and gives me something therapeutic to do in the winter. Both for my head and my arthritis.

SaintGermaine has it.Paint for yourself, and for fun.

I was afraid to do these wolves for a few years:

Almost everything for years but then I quit worrying about my poor painting of "representative counters" and I am slowly ruining… I mean painting… miniatures to an acceptable standard – mine.

28mm Samurai. Have you seen the silk that some of those fellows wear? Even their armor is multi-colored. Scares me!

GypsyComet22 Nov 2014 8:18 a.m. PST

The Confrontation minis used to do this to me, then that lovely set of Washes came out from GW (now mostly available from Vallejo), and broke the paralysis.

Grelber22 Nov 2014 8:23 a.m. PST

Essex Medieval figures, about 20 years ago. I don't think I ever did paint any of them.

No problem with Reaper, Foundry, Hasslefree or anybody else.

Yep. Eyes on 25/28mm figures. Horses and large terrain pieces.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut22 Nov 2014 9:03 a.m. PST

Scared? No. I recognize that I am not the wonderful painter I was 20 years ago. Or even ten years ago. I do the best I can, I skip a lot of detail, and I hope the result is coherent. So what if it isn't Golden Daemon quality? I still like my little soldiers on the shelf.

rampantlion22 Nov 2014 9:12 a.m. PST

Yes, 40mm figures. I think that the canvas is too large and I would not be able to do the scale/detail justice. I have a few medieval and the heraldry seems daunting even though I have painted 28mm heraldry for quite some time.

I fear no 'lead' man :)
Actually I have a full army of French HYW to do,undercoated and some blocked in, shudder not looking forward to 50+ coat of arms and banners. But am getting there (only been 5 years) oh and Flashman, your just showing off :+) nice work there.
I think if we just pile in and get about 50% done it start to get easier (I'm going to do everything besides the coat of arms and see how to get them done after.
Cheers all happy painting.
PS who manufactures the wolves? Flash.

WarWizard22 Nov 2014 9:34 a.m. PST

I have a massive beast that is quite large. Do not know the manufacturer or what it is. But the sculpt is excellent and very detailed. I am afraid I would not do it justice.

Allen – if you tried 40mm you would really like it. After doing 40mm I find it had to go back to 28mm.
Although I have to agree with you about heraldry. I do not think I would be good at that ay any scale.

Flashman14, those wolves are excellent!

davbenbak22 Nov 2014 10:40 a.m. PST

I have been shying away from painting my HYW collection because of all the coats of arms. What always brings me 'round is that thought that I'd like to spend more time gaming than painting.

nvdoyle22 Nov 2014 10:46 a.m. PST

Yeah.

Since I went blind in one eye, I've been terrified that I won't be able to paint worth a damn.

MAD MIKE22 Nov 2014 12:24 p.m. PST

Horses. I finally bore down and painted the pack horses from the Airfix Mountain troops and although not perfect, they came out fairly presentable. Next challenge will be Romans.

Cyrus the Great22 Nov 2014 12:30 p.m. PST

My Flats.

redbanner414522 Nov 2014 12:48 p.m. PST

I'm with skipper John. 28mm samurai with those colorful silk knots in their armour terrified me.

coopman22 Nov 2014 1:53 p.m. PST

Yes. This has definitely made me steer clear of some periods because I know that my painting talent is not good enough to do the figures justice.

Rrobbyrobot22 Nov 2014 8:07 p.m. PST

There have been some space ship models I didn't purchase because I thought I wouldn't be able to paint them well enough to suit me.
I've put off buying Highlanders for my British Colonials for the same reason.

Thanks all – those wolves are from Acheson Creations.

Argyll socks on 15mm Highlanders.

I have the old 4th edition metal Azhag the Slaughterer from when I was a wee lad. The box says it's for advanced modellers and painters, and that idea stuck with me, even though I've happily progressed sufficiently beyond the messy, non-covering paint jobs of youth. The orc is garbage, but that wyvern is nice.

Aside from that, officers of any regiment are left to the end with a mild dread, hoping that skills improve with each soldier painted before them.
